oil pressure at low rpm

Timely question, Bob. I drove my new to me 997.2 4S down to Reno and back today, about 50 miles and I was watching the oil pressure while my PDK was in the auto mode. Even at 1400rpm the pressure stayed at around the 2, which I assume is 2 bars or 32psi? It looks to me that the Porsche engineers designed the oil pump to keep the pressure from getting too low with the PDK shifting into 6th gear at 30 miles an hour.

With the discussion of engine issues on PDK cars and whether to always shift the PDK in manual mode to keep the rpm's (and presumably oil pressure) up I am interested to hear other forum members opinions.

2011 4S....37k miles, never really paid much attention to it. Grandpa mode shifts to high gears quickly and does lug the engine. Again....never thought about it being an issue. Still don't. Switch to Sport Mode,...now we're talkin!!

If it still accels smoothly then It's not lugging.

Other factors can come into play as well. Are you trying to go uphill in a high gear at low speed or simply moving out smoothly on level or downhill grades? Getting caught in a gear too high to provide timely acceleration could put you in a hazardous situation that could have easily driven away from.

Your 997.2 has more than one oil pump, (e.g I believe at least a primary and secondary). If you compared oil pressure in your car, a steady 2, to that of a 997 .1 (with one pump) you'd find the latter would be pegged at or close to 5 all the time. (The fact that they have different engines notwithstanding.)

As to lugging the engine, it's a high rev-ing engine, and happiest at high revs but, unlike older models, where anything under 4k RPMs would be lugging the engine, you can easily run at 2K RPMs - but where is the fun in that.

RTFM. 1800 minimum for the 997.1, but without going out in the cold to get the book I can't remember for the 997.2, but it is way lower than I ever drive it.

I don't think there a specific RPM that's considered "lugging the motor".

I can easily cruise at 1500 RPMs without lugging the motor. But, at the same time, I can see how it's completely possible to lug the motor at much higher RPMs.

It's more about load & throttle input, and notsomuch about driving at a specific RPM.

I keep my rpm above 3k. Typically 4-5k.
Engine sounds great above 4k

When I first got the car, I'd cruise the freeway at 70 mph in 6th thinking it was quieter & better fuel mileage but would get the odd misfire and puff of smoke when starting.
Dealer said I was "driving Miss Daisy" and to wind it up. No more misfires, no more smoke and a lot more fun.

IIRC, according to Porsche's Owner's Manual for the 997.1, it's recommended to not run in a higher gear when the RPM is below 1500.

We really have to restrict this question to flat ground since there are almost infinite answers depending on up- or downhill and the angle.

For me it's anything under 800 rpm.on level ground. But I also have a tune and my idle RPM is higher than normal, but if I remember correctly when my car was stock it was just under 700.

with my X-pipe(mated to PSE), anything under 2 and even 1/4 acceleration I get a slight bog (known issue).

i was wondering if anyone here can tell me if Fabspeed HFC does the same thing?
how about Bypass crossover (non-X) pipes?

Any situation where the engine is below 2K and you are using heavy throttle. Even worse if this is being done in5th 0r 6th gear. I believe there is a reference to this in the owner's manual.

Depends on the gear.

1st, 2nd, 3rd - I would say you are fine with idle speed.
4th, 5th, 6th, etc - I'd say keep it above 2000.
