Anyone DIY paint their steering wheel trim?

I'm upgrading my sport steering wheel from a 997.1 C2S. The new wheel is on the right. All is going well.

While I have the airbag out I removed the ugly grey trim and want to paint it. I'm thinking either silver to match the side trim, black to blend in with the airbag, or contrasting red to go with the top stripe. I've had Eric at bumperplugs paint pieces before, good results, not cheap though.

I'm seriously considering a DIY rattle can job here. Silver undercoat with high gloss clear top coat. Has anyone painted their trim themselves? Any guidance on color matching the silver trim?

I plastic-dipped the silver side buttons and trim to red instead.

Great looking wheel semicycler

Have you had to redo the buttons at all after doing the Plasti-dip simoncpw?

Einszett silber and Wurth silver wheel paint seems to be a good match for the silver trim. If painting on plastic, don't forget the adhesion promoter. Good luck and please post pics of the result.

The wheel is from DCT MotorSports. Pretty good deal with a core exchange. Still waiting on Ivan for a return address to send my original wheel.

I have a lead on a Dupont color match to the OEM Alumalook. Checking to see if a local auto paint supply company can mix me a few aerosol cans. Stay tuned!

I was at the dealer today, and they had a local interior person who was able to paint the steering wheel (removing scratches) as well as touch up scratches on my console, and fully recondition the handbrake. Unbelievable results. I'm sure most dealers have a good interior guy to help recondition some cars for resale and for current clients.

I had to redo the lower silver trim twice because it was peeling off, the 3rd time I also sprayed a matt clear coat paint over the plastic-dip, solved the problem and I can still undo it if I wanted to.

Strangely, the tip buttons which I press a lot more then the lower trim, still look very good so far (about 6 months, DD).

Plastic-dip is really a great way to experience color before making the final decision.

Here's the lead on the DuPont paint (formerly Spies Hecker): http://986forum.com/forums/diy-proje...or-pieces.html

Spies Hecker paint formulation details: http://cdb.shcolor.info/en/Formula.m...eType=official

I'm trying to source paint some from a local auto paint supply house. The shop most referred here in Minneapolis, Welle Auto Supply, uses PPG paints. Unfortunately they were not able to cross reference these paint codes to PPG.

So, anyone have a lead for a MN auto paint supply house that services DuPont or Spies Hecker paint? How about an online lead, ideally to mix it into an aerosol can and ship?

Dang it! The interior silver pieces on a 2006 997.1 are Galvano Silver, not Alumalook. Dead end here.

Will talk to a local auto paint supply house tomorrow. Not looking good on the DIY front, unless I want to repaint all the trim pieces.

I've been considering this for a long time but haven't started yet. My steering wheel will be first as I have a blue airbag and black TA wheel. I will likely paint all the trim black rather than trying to match the silver. I'm actually trying to get rid of all the silver! In the past I've used Krylon fusion with great success on car and snowmobile projects so I know it holds up when parts are prepped correctly. The satin black can match other black trim well if sprayed just right. Proper automotive systems in a spray can work well if you need a color match.

I give up on the DIY match for Galvano Silver. Two auto paint supply stores, three home centers and one art supply store. No pre-mixed silver paint to be found matches. The computer match is off too.

Next up is either black to match the airbag (Plasti-Dip perhaps), or I'm pulling all parts I want Galvano Silver and shipping them to Eric at Bumperplugs to paint.
