997.2 controls retrofit

Inspired by user littlemilla3 I am currently considering retrofitting the 997.2 controls into my 997.1

What I mean is replacing the Aircon controls and the PSE/exhause buttons with the 997.2 ones....

I have already bought a new 997.2 chassis. (The part that holds them all in the car - only costed 20 bucks so I thought it was worth seeing if this was easier than cutting the old one to fit...)
I have ordered the cubby hole and am sourcing the a/C controls.

My key questions are:

1. I read somewhere that rather than putting in the controller i can just swap the fascia? If so how do you do this?
2. Has anybody retrofitted the PSE control buttons? If so is this plug and play or how can this be done?

For Now I am probably going to spray the OEM navi black, I have BOSE and don't want to fiddle with this right now...

Please if any body has experience swapping these 2 parts I would appreciate any help- before I break something...

OK... have now ordered:

  • 997.2 centre console chassis
  • 997.2 Heater control unit
  • 997.2 PSE ?buttons module
  • 992.2 cubby hole

I guess some of the items will take a couple of weeks to arrive...

My plan is to try to remove the nav system fascia at the same time and spray it a matching black.
I also want to add a Dension unit at the same time but might leave this out for now - funds are running low after that small shopping spree.
Plus if i get a Dension i can always run it from the CD changer.

I really hope i don't screw this up...

Final change in the future will be to get rid of that grey ring around the sports steering wheel...

The grey ring around the sport steering wheel is pretty easy to remove. Follow any airbag removal or steering wheel removal DIY, including the part where you disconnect the battery. Removing the grey ring from the airbag is straight forward. I've sent mine to Eric at Bumperplugs for paint matching to the three silver pieces next to it on the steering wheel. He's the only person I could find capable of matching that interior color.

Have all your parts arrived yet? I'm really interested in seeing the 997.2 center console chassis installed.

Take a look in the 997tt forum under pcm3 retrofit. There are instructions on how to do the hvac controls and other controls in that thread. You will have to change the wiring to control the Ac if u put the whole .2 u it in

I also got tired of volcano gray on our PCM stack so just took mine apart and had it all painted. Here is my how to:

A/C controller & bottom cubby hole installed today..

No issues, A/C unit is plug and play.

PSE & button row is not - the connector is different - new ones connector is wider ....

Anybody at al know if this would work if I rewired a new connector...
plus i guess no chance but a connection plan/diagram

looks like i may well be painting the old one black :-)

Attached photo of progress...

A/C unit installed, cubby hole at bottom installed (not very visible but its there!

The cubby hole was a lot of work for little effect! but it is better...

all I need to do now is spray everything else black - anybody know the colour type to use to match the rest?

Satin black? matt black?

Looks good. What year is your car and what year was the 997.2 controller from. Do you have the part number of yours? The reason I ask is cause others that do this couldn't get the Ac working without rewiring but seems that's not the case for you. As for match painting I would being the .2 piece to your painter along with the faceplates you want painted and tell him to match it. They can test color samples against the .2 piece

Also did you have to make a notch in the console to fit the .2 unit as one of the other members here did

997.2 A/C part code was 997.613.553.01

997.1 A/C part code was 997.653.101.11

My A/C unit is without seat heating, but i checked littlemilla3's post and he did a plug & Play with a unit including seat heating.

I wonder if there is a confusion between the A/C unit and the contol unit for PASM etc..
that has a different connector - I wonder here is it is just the addition of 2 more rows of connectors or if the cables have been remapped....

Haven't got time and am a little too lazy to lie on the car seat for a few hours to swap connectors out without knowing for sure that it would work.

I think saw in another post from bumperplugs that the remapping has been done in the past - can't find the post though..

Update......

currently my car is full of cables and circuit boards...

I have removed the button controllers for the 997.2 version and the 997.1 version and taken them down to circuit boards. My observations:

The placement of the button actuators on the Circuit board are different.
I reckon that if you have a set up with 2 or 3 buttons, you might get away with just swapping the circuit boards around...
I have 4 buttons and the 4th button is so far offset that there is no way you can do that.

SO, I am in the middle of seeing if I can re-wire the new switch.

I used a knife to cut out the connector socket at the back of the 997.2 button bank so the car plug would fit

when you plug the new unit into the 997.1 car, guess what - it doesn't work off bat.....

I have the following buttons:

PASM button - Small Shock absorber
PSE exhaust control button
Stability control button
Raise lower rear wing button.

When you plug in the 997.2 button bank:
Back lights work
PSM button works
PASM button works.

PSE button not working
rear spoiler button not working.

After 2 hours I currently have:

Spoiler working fully
Damned damned PSE button not working.
I can get the LED to light up but I cant find the plug to put the other cable to make the button work :-(

Not sure if this is user error or something else - if I manually touch some of the pins the PSE turns on and the LED lights, but these are pins that are already in use. I guess i need to keep on trying a little longer - sooo close.

Does anybody have ANY experience in re-wiring the controller and can lend me any advice?

Sorted!

Took a close look at the circuit board and found the right pin for the final cable.
So i now have a full 997.2 Central area below the Navi system.
images attached - taken in the dark. I will get a daylight photo if required.

TBH even with the Navi unit looking the same -it looks a whole load better and I don't have to worry about the sticky, ugly, white temp and fan buttons any more.
I am moderately technical and not afraid to tinker - I would strongly recommend this change, total cost was around 300 USD - all was sourced from Ebay.

So i now just need to take apart the Navi unit and spray it black - I will probably do the steering wheel grey bit at the same time.....
