Why an Aston Martin?
Why an Aston Martin?
Why is there an Aston Martin in the cover page of the 6SpeedOnline iPhone app? I spent a few minutes seeing how many threads there are per car maker, Porsche related topics lead by 117,000+, the second in the list is BMW with 5,000+, the rest around 4,000 and way below that. So it's clearly a Porsche forum and it should proudly show one of the artistic pictures of one of the members.
Not important at all, just curious...

Porsche does not allow the use of pictures of their cars. That simple. Mods will respond eventually.

Hmmm. They've got a nice Porsche on the rennlist splash page. Couldn't imagine Porsche having any problem with promoting their own vehicles on enthusiast forums.
Bimmerforums swaps out their splash every now & then, which I think is nice. They should mix it up a bit.
Of course it could turn out that if they put a beautiful 997 on the splash that suddenly all the AM owners would get all bent out of shape- that's the nature of the world.

You'd think that wouldn't be an issue but then you haven't met the lawyers presiding over PCNA's legal department. I haven't met them either but I picture horns, fangs and long tails. An enthusiast on Rennlist posted pictures of his collection of old Porsche memorabilia on his private website and got a NASTY letter from these heroes who ordered him to cease and desist immediately or else.
I guess if you are a bit of an old timer, pre-2009 or so, you may recall that there used to be Porsche 911s in the banner. Then, IIRC, either PAG or PCNA sent a cease and desist and the forum pulled them (the images) down. There was a thread on this, again, IIRC five or six years ago. This also may have been before IB took over 6Speed.
Shocking. (But not, I guess) - I'm no lawyer but it seems to me that a person should be able to make an illustration of any object in the public domain, and use it as their own art.
This really seems like somebody needs to take somebody to lunch. Maybe I sound ignorant, but I am missing the point of how Porsche making a forum not use an image that represents their vehicle protects their bottom line.
That would be like going to the races and telling everyone to put their little white Porsche flags away or face legal action.
My dealings with PCNA have all gone really nicely. Granted I am usually asking about specific dates for races & driver schedules, they've been always prompt to reply & friendly with their answers. There must be a reason that all the PCA sites and subgroups can have Porsches all over their pages, and Porsche actually has downloadable banners & wallpaper for people to use on their personal social media pages, but 6speed cannot use even a sketch of a p-car without drawing the attention of a legal team in Georgia.
In the end, it's not that big of a deal. Aston Martins and Ferraris don't bum me out to look at- but it's one of those funny things that surprises me as a fan & avid supporter of the marque.

That's bad enough but it gets worse imo. when an enthusiast is threatened by their lawyers for posting pictures of 20 and 30 year old 911 owner's manuals on his private website. How the hell does that damage the brand or the bottom line? He wasn't selling anything. A reasonable company would see it as a great sign of customer loyalty and support as well as free PR.
It's a Brave New World!
