3M 1080 Gloss Intense Blue on my 997
After driving my silver 997 for many years. It's time for a transformation. Not gutsy enough to do a full respray paint job. Decided on 3M 1080 Gloss Intense Blue to mimic Porsche maritime blue color.

Well, you could have fooled me. Looks like a factory paint job to my eyes, at least going by the pictures. So that just peels off when you long for silver again?

The vinyl wrap costs around US$2000 (including labor and 3M 1080 Gloss Intense Blue Vinyl) and took around 4 days to complete. I had no idea it was so labor intensive. The installer had to remove the side mirrors, head light, bumpers, and door handles to do this.
My car started out as a base 997.1 with silver paint. Added the GT3 body kit and rear center muffler mod (Gondo hack plus rewiring of the pipes. The tip is just some common tips ($40) found at local muffler shop and nothing special), added genuine Ruf Wheels when Alois Ruf and Wife Barbara (german international exchange student whom studied in Taiwan 20 years ago) came to Taiwan earlier this year to introduce Ruf brand to Taiwan (Ruf Dealer in Taipei). Had a great evening chatting with Alois, couldn't afford a new Ruf car so decided to buy a set of Ruf 19" wheels ($5000) as my token of appreciation for the Ruf company. Will be interested in buying a Ruf Boxster 981 when ready to dump the 997. Figure the wheels will never be outdated (Ruf wheels looked the same for the past decades).
I was about to sell my 997 few weeks ago to upgrade to a gorgeous red 997.1 Turbo Tip. Had to pay additional US$40,000 for the trade. Decided to give the vinyl wrap a try so I won't get bored for the mean time. If the wrap works out, I will keep this car longer and save impulse money in the short run.
Black, White, Silver colors are too common and boring.
Red, Yellow are fun but I already got yellow lotus, white Alpina 7 F02, red NSX, and red 599 Berlinetta. Want to sample various colors on my cars.
Porsche mexico blue and maritime blue (BMW laguna blue) have always been my favorite colors despite the negative comments from my wife. My kids are huge fan of the cartoon Doraeamon (the famous blue robotic cat from Japan. The 997 would either be sponge bob yellow or Doraemon blue according to my kids.
Decided on 3M vinyl Gloss Intense Blue rather than Avery Gloss Blue based on installer recommendation. I can always peel this off when I get sick of this color. Overall I am very happy about this 3M product and meticulous job by the installer. The color is an attention grabber nonetheless. Made the old 2005 997 like a brand new car again.
