I think i heard somone said how good and how rare the 996TTS is in months ago. I perdict i will hear someone bad mouth the 997S in 6 months

 

Than what about a used 996 GT3 vs. 997 S? Both are going for about the same money. Just don't know if the 997 S is going to be as much a driver's car as the GT3. BTW, my license plate says " (heart) My GT3". Of course I can transfer the plates to the 997 GT3 when the time comes. :-) Or the 998 GT3.... so on and so forth.

 

Doc previously had an '01 TT that he traded for his current 997. He is talking about going back to a TT but a TTS this time.

 

In Buddy's defense, the original question was "Does anyone think that the 997S is a better car than the 996tt?". Buddy merely stated, "definitely not". It was his personal opinion and did not have any references to his car. On the other hand, your post above had a very antagonistic tone towards Buddy. Buddy is a big boy (except when he sharts) so he can take care of his own battles but that's my .02 cents worth.

 

Food for thought, or is it fuel for fire... RUF uses the 996T motor for their RUF RT12 997:

RUF RT12 is Ruf Automobiles’s version of the latest Porsche 997.
But instead of a normal aspirated engine they are using a tuned engine from the 996 Turbo with at least 650 hp.

Does anyone know if the 997T motor will based on the 996T (derived from GT1 race motor) or 997 motor? Is the 997 motor itself an evolution of the 996 motor?

For me, at the same price point, a used 996T is the hands down choice over the 997S... it's simply the current bargin of the century. Not knocking the 997S at all... but Porsche Turbos (of all years) are legendary.

 

I think people generally have bigger problems to worry about. Such as putting food on the plate and a shelter over their heads. Grown men with $100,000 cars should not argue over whose car is better. People with 997s' made that choice over the 996tt. Those with 996tt have one of the greates cars in the world. Personally, I wouldn't trade my 997s for any car in the world. The point is, both cars are awesome and were all lucky to have one. Enjoy and drive safe.

 

The Judge has a valid point. A Porsche, IMO, is a reflection of your personality, beliefs and values. A Porsche owner/driver enjoys the better things in life;excellence is expected, and excellence is given. No car has ever given me the satisfaction I have always experienced with my Porsches, and I have been fortunate enough to have owned a variety of fine cars in my life.
Respect others opinions as they too have chosen a brother car to your Porsche. Even if they appear to be idiots!!

 

Obviously, not everybody has to worry about those things.

I think it's good to discuss the pros/cons of each Porsche. There are people who either don't own a Porsche, or who own one and are considering a different model. Hearing opinions allows them to better refine their assessments of each car, and maybe consider things that they had previously not thought of.

 

Hearing a bunch of 996TT owners say the 996 is better and a bunch of 997S owners saying the 997 is better doesn't exactly aid someone's decision.

 

Making a good decision about which sports car to buy starts with deciding what it is you want out of a sports car. Some people haven't thought about what's important to them, and reading what *others* think is important might help them refine their position.

For example, after reading about the steering of each car, during a test drive someone might assess the steering more closely than they would have before.

It's important for people to give reasons why they like one car better than the other. These "reasons" won't apply to everyone, but they serve as markers for others to at least consider.

 

I think the real message comes from those who looked at both and voted with their wallet. I certainly loved the 996TT and looked very carefuly at three of them with the thought of moding performance and electronics.

The 997S has the performance and the cool toys (if you buy them). The feel of the ride was what convinced me. I do understand the love people have for their heavly moded cars.

Perhaps we should compare stock 996TT to stock 997S at the same dollar value ?

 

There is nothing I like more than a classic 997S vs. 996tt debate. I just don't think its about personal battles. It sounds like the "Corvette" syndrome in which once in a while a guy pops out of nowhere and says " I can buy a corvette for forty thousand less and smoke all of you."

 

Well said. I enjoy(ed) my 997, but there are a lot more important things in life than having the best of the best. Be blessed with health and happiness. Health is the most important thing for living.

 

Excactly Ray... but definitly less things to bad mouth in the 997S than the Turbo... maybe the Power but thats about it over the Turbo i guess...

 

Agreed 100%! I am in the position right now where I am deliberating between a new 997S cab that is on the water and a slightly used 996TT cab. Now a 3rd vehicle has entered the picture and it is a 996TT cab with X50. For the past couple of days, I have been reading each and every post regarding the differences between the cars and believe it or not, there is some good information to be obtained there.

When I get back into town and actually do some test driving I'll probably know which way to go. My bet though is that the forced induction of the TT will be hard to resist. I remember that I was wanting more power about a week after I finally broke in my '01 C2 cab. I anticipate the same with a new 997S. There has to be a "thrill ride" factor and an adrenalin rush that can only be obtained by forced induction. Considering that last statement, it sounds like the TT is right for me BUT. My last used car was the first car that I bought in high school. The TT is based on the 996 chassis and the 997 is supposed to be better and more refined. The 997's build quality is reported to be better. Most importantly, buying a car at the end of the model's run, just prior to the release of the new model, usually leads to buyer's remorse.
