997S > 996tt

Does anyone think that the 997S is a better car than the 996tt?

I was in the market for a 996TT and was just about to sit down and negotiate a deal on a 2002 X50 coupe when a 2005 997S coupe came in on consignment.
Two test drives later and I have the 997S.
I loved the power of the 996TT but the overall feeling of the 997S was much better. It's a DD so that was a factor as well.... I still have second thoughts !

Also note that the 996TT was pretty bare and the 997S has 20K in options.

Dave,
I know how you feel. I had a 2001 TT, Tip that was loaded with options. I traded it for a base 997 6 speed, lightly optioned. The TT seemed to take a little effort and consentration to drive. The 997 is almost telepathic.. it almost anticipates where I want to go.
Drivability in the 997 is better than the 996, IMHO. I do have the 19" wheels on the 997, 18" on the turbo. Bottom line is you have the latest edition from Porsche. I do miss the raw power of the TT, but as I have only 500 miles on my 06 I really don't know how it will perform after 2000 miles.
Good choice

Keep the shiny side up!

Buddy why do you always got to be so biased... not everycar that you own is the BEST!!! in my personal opinion on the 997S vs. 996TT situation i should be the best to answer this question simply because i had 2 TTs before and one with around 600hp and now i traded YOUR precious TT"S" for a 997S<--- because it is MUCH MORE CAR!!!... ofcourse Buddy i understand the power difference between the two but to me or MOST PORSCHE DRIVERS is not all about power... is MORE ABOUT BALANCE!!! maybe some of us 6speeders shouldn't be driving Porsches if they simply want power... a Porsche is about Balance between power handling and agility... which the TT is missing 2 out of the 3 critirias IMO of even being a Porsche... but enough said about that before i get some of you mad... the above is all IMO!!! don't ***** ok kids!!! especially you 996TT owners...

I'd take a 996TT over a 997S; as a matter of fact I will, probably next year! I agree the 997S is better balanced but I'm thinking w/blistens and a couple of other mods a used 996TT will be untouchable for anything under 100K.

I walked away from a 996TT test drive shaking my head and wondering what the fuss was about. I walked away from my 997S test drive with a 997S

Straight line or curves, HP and torque are always going to come out on top all other things equal.

Have owned numerous NA and TT Porsches (924S/944/SC/993/996) and everyone handled like a dream. I loved everyone of them and with each new version there was more power and a tweak in the handling (at best). Having a NA Porsche puts more power than anyone can legally use in the US. None of us can, legally, drive our cars anywhere near their capability on the street. On the track, very few can approach the 10/10 usage of a normally aspirated car let alone a HP/torque monster. So picking between NA and TT is a matter of choice.

When a 997 passes me on the track I'll choose to sell the TT. Until then, it's all TT for me.

I recently bought a 996tt cab (my 10th P-car). I really wanted a 997s cab with cocoa interior. My test drive of the 997s cab left me cold and somewhat sad for the 997tt. Each iteration since the 993 has become more refined, more capable and heavier (and more distant) than the last. The car might be faster, but you sure can't tell from the driver's seat.

I can confidently predict the 997tt will be faster and more capable than the 996tt. I KNOW it will also be heavier, less connected and less fun than the 996tt. Just like the 996tt is heavier and less fun than the 993tt. It might be a better, faster car, but imvho, it won't be as fun to drive.

The other factor is the ability to tune the car. Mine goes under the knife tomorrow. I'll get a realiable 100hp tomorrow for beer money - you can't do that with a 997.

Ultimately, it's personal preference. I'll stick with the 996tt for now. I respect your opinion and preference for the 997s.

Well i respect your opinion too SUNBURN but i think that a 997S is a much more agile and LIGHTER car than the TT and it requires much more skill and attention to bring the best out of the car... with a TT on the track all you have to do is step on the throuttle THATS IT!!! with a 997S you need to do the other 99% thats involved with driving a car let alone a RR Porsche... there is no doubt the 997 is much more of a driver's car... any argument will be a waste of time... a TT is much more of a cruiser than the Carreras always... and that is why a GT3 is based on a Carrera and a GT2 RWD not some AWD heavy chunk of metal... admit it we buy what we want and we drive what we want but there is simply no reason to bend facts...

Coming from a 996tt, the 997S has a much more refined, and at the same time, a more "pure" feel than the 996tt. I found myself quickly bored with the power of the 996tt. Perhaps this is why some of us kept increasing the H.P. on these cars; getting more power, getting used to it, and then wanting more power in hopes of being excited again and so on. You gotta get what excites you; for me, it is the 997S.
