997S > 996tt

I was in the market for a 996TT and was just about to sit down and negotiate a deal on a 2002 X50 coupe when a 2005 997S coupe came in on consignment.
Two test drives later and I have the 997S.
I loved the power of the 996TT but the overall feeling of the 997S was much better. It's a DD so that was a factor as well.... I still have second thoughts !
Also note that the 996TT was pretty bare and the 997S has 20K in options.

Dave,
I know how you feel. I had a 2001 TT, Tip that was loaded with options. I traded it for a base 997 6 speed, lightly optioned. The TT seemed to take a little effort and consentration to drive. The 997 is almost telepathic.. it almost anticipates where I want to go.
Drivability in the 997 is better than the 996, IMHO. I do have the 19" wheels on the 997, 18" on the turbo. Bottom line is you have the latest edition from Porsche. I do miss the raw power of the TT, but as I have only 500 miles on my 06 I really don't know how it will perform after 2000 miles.
Good choice
Keep the shiny side up!

I'd take a 996TT over a 997S; as a matter of fact I will, probably next year! I agree the 997S is better balanced but I'm thinking w/blistens and a couple of other mods a used 996TT will be untouchable for anything under 100K.

When a 997 passes me on the track I'll choose to sell the TT. Until then, it's all TT for me.

I recently bought a 996tt cab (my 10th P-car). I really wanted a 997s cab with cocoa interior. My test drive of the 997s cab left me cold and somewhat sad for the 997tt. Each iteration since the 993 has become more refined, more capable and heavier (and more distant) than the last. The car might be faster, but you sure can't tell from the driver's seat.
I can confidently predict the 997tt will be faster and more capable than the 996tt. I KNOW it will also be heavier, less connected and less fun than the 996tt. Just like the 996tt is heavier and less fun than the 993tt. It might be a better, faster car, but imvho, it won't be as fun to drive.
The other factor is the ability to tune the car. Mine goes under the knife tomorrow. I'll get a realiable 100hp tomorrow for beer money - you can't do that with a 997.
Ultimately, it's personal preference. I'll stick with the 996tt for now. I respect your opinion and preference for the 997s.

Coming from a 996tt, the 997S has a much more refined, and at the same time, a more "pure" feel than the 996tt. I found myself quickly bored with the power of the 996tt. Perhaps this is why some of us kept increasing the H.P. on these cars; getting more power, getting used to it, and then wanting more power in hopes of being excited again and so on. You gotta get what excites you; for me, it is the 997S.
