New member considering defecting

New Member - approved to post finally- thanks for having such a lively & diverse forum.

Been an NSX owner since '94, strayed to a new
C-2 Cab in '00-big disappointment (RMS and minor electrical glitches, sloppy shifter)I modified it the best I could w/H&R's & Fabspeed but 6 months later I was back to another NSX.

As you all know in '91 when the NSX was introduced, it set some pretty lofty standards in reliability and performance but the car has grown long in the tooth and is due for replacement as an '07 w/a V10. Now I'm considering a Porsche again- 997- I can't decide if the S is worth the extra dollars. Originally I had my sights set on a low mile GT3 but for the same money the 997 seems a better value.

So fire away!

Steve...Have you driven a 997S? What a machine, the extra displacement is noticable. You could spend a month just picking out what options you want.

The S is definitely worth it, in sport mode this thing is just too much fun! You won't regret spending a little extra for the added displacement.

I drove both and opted for the base 997...The slight difference in power was not worth the extra dough to me...To each his own........

If I had to do it over again I wold get the S, but my base 997 is an outstanding car in it's own right. My next P car will be a GT3, but I'd change the nasty rear wing to something that flows with the body.

It is hard to say whether the S hp difference, by itself, is worth the extra money. Most of the mags say they don't notice the difference from test drives. The standard S gives you more than add'l hp. You get the larger brakes (red vs. black) and PASM, which are both options on the base car. On the S, you can also add the X51 for 381 hp (later if you like) and the sport exhaust, which are not available on the base car. In other words, the S is more flexible for added hp later if that is desired. They are both GREAT cars. It's personal preferences...and needs...

To not spend the extra for the S seems like a waste ............ less than 10% more you get not only a faster car but lots of other options and the $$ comes back when you sell it .

After having a 2000 996 coupe and now a base 997, I think the only extra money well spent is on a GT3.....

Now that damn car is awesome to drive........If only it had back seats for the kids............

I debated about the S non S strategy for months and then finally decided to go for the S. I wanted PASM, I wanted Xenon lights, I wanted the extra horses and l aslo researched resale value and it became very clear to me. Besides, after spending nearly 100K after tax and license I would have always wondered if the S would have been a better way to go...now that hurts.
