Catalytic converter woes

My stepdad has a 2008 C4S Cab and it seems his Cats are on the way out. Looks like parts alone are $2000+ each! Does anyone know if cats are supposed to be warrantied for longer than the rest of the car? I though I heard something aboutt his years ago.

Right. Has he seen the dealer? I believe emissions equipment is warranted for 10 years. Partially for that reason, I would find it VERY hard to believe the cats are worn out, unless they were subject to abuse.

Well... if Porsche will not replace them... they will be very easy to find used.
I have a set off my 08 4s. and im sure im not the only one.

I would probably go aftermarket hi flows if I were in his shoes as well. ($2k)

Thanks guys, Ill call him tomorrow and have him call porsche again, He is meticulous with his car and they told him he needed cats. He almost paid them but said it was so much money that he wanted to confirm it was the cats.

Will hiflow cats pass inspection?

It depends. If your car throws a CEL after install, then you will have a problem (depending on your local emission regulations).

Check with the cat manufactures to find one that guarantees that they will not throw a CEL.

Or, plan for an ECU tune that will account for the hi flow cats.

In the Audi world, some people use o2 spacers to resolve the issue too, but I have no idea if that will work in a Porsche setup.

Any differences between testing in PA and NY? CA is probably the most strict.

Depends on where you live in NY, downstate and NYC have full emission and safety inspection. Unlike CA the parts don't have to be stock as long as it passes the sniffer during the driving test. My 86 is exempt since it's over 25 yrs old. If you have a check engine light or any stored codes you fail. If a car is border line, you can take it for a hard drive to get the cats hot first and then do the test immediately which sometimes works.

Aftermarket cats seem to be problematic with throwing codes unless you chip the car. Some people use extensions that offset the sensors which also help.

Your best bet would be to find a set of takeoff OEM cats - or I'd also highly suggest aftermarket high flow cats instead!

The issue with takeoff OEM units is that it's hard to tell the lifespan left in those. If you'd like a set of high flow performance cats - give us a ring and I can definitely help you out with that
