Hit a massive pothole, destroyed a wheel... Help!?
Hey y'all,
While driving home from a work meeting I hit a submerged pothole during a nasty rainstorm on I-75N and managed to destroy my front right wheel of my '08 997.1S. (Hard to see in this pic, but it not only bent the rim it actually tore the rim of the wheel off and completely tore the sidewall all the way through.) To make matters worse, I just got laid off from my job so I'd upped my deductible on my insurance to save money, so I'm having to come completely out of pocket for this.
Anyone have a good source for a replacement wheel that isn't going to absolutely bend me over on the cost of a new (or gently used) replacement? I mean, hell, at the cost Suncoast et al want for a replacement OEM wheel I'm halfway tempted to go the aftermarket route and replace all four wheels.
Just had the same kind of incident except that the tire also had a bubble and also had to be replaced. The wheel was bent in 2 places on the inside. My Indie sent the wheel out for straightening and ordered a replacement tire. Cost: 500 for the wheel and 345 for the tire.
Wheel turned out as new. get opinion as to repairability. On e-bay you should be able to find a replacement wheel at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately the rim is completely torn along the lip of the wheel and is cracked on the inside, as well, so it's toast. The tire is destroyed, as well.
Been checking ebay, PCA, 6 speed, Rennlist, etc., so far nada.

Awww man, I have the same wheels... ouch!!!
If the Lip was not torn away from the spokes I would have sent it to a rim repair/straightening shop. The good ones can do wonders and weld new material on there and grind it down and paint it, but I would be worried about integrity and strength too. You still might want to try out that option if you can't track a wheel down quickly.. Bummer that is seems beyond repairable. I would definitely file a complaint with the city and take photos of the pot hole where it happened. This happens in Los angeles all the time and I know they have a department and fund that handles these types of claims...
If the city will pay for it, buy a new one from Porsche!!
lol, good luck with that. I hit a pothole last week too, fortunately for me, the wheel is fine, unfotunately my tire bubbled and has to be replaced, another good thing was, I was due for tire replacement. I was going to buy them in the winter but now I have to buy them sooner.

Your California tax dollars at work...instead of repairing the pothole, they reimburse claimants.
