I bet the plug would be fine if people used only 25-30 ft/lbs of torque on it

Congratulations!! Before it stripped, was it a hex fitting (8mm?) or was it a Torx fitting?

I was told just the opposite - it's 8mm hex and not torx and that using torx may cause the rounding. Maybe ECS can confirm.

why do you guys use a different plug? for the magnetic to catch some possible shavings as a way to identify IMS failure?

...and you'd lose that bet. The aluminum used for the plug is very soft and the hex slot is not deep enough to withstand the forces required to loosen and tighten the bolt plug to spec.

Yes. Trying to trap as much magnetic metal as possible (from any source but there's not as many sources as say a small block Chevy with a cast iron block). Magnetic drain plugs (and adjuncts, like in some automatic transmission pans) have been around a long time.

A magnetic metal sensing sensor is the basis for an IMSB add-on warning system (I think named Guardian?).

Correct.

The hole got rounded and the 8mm hex could not get the plug out. The threads were unaffected.

Sorry for the confusion.

Similar effect and a major PIA.

I think you need to consider the possibility that not all folks recognize the difference between Torx and Hex. Using the wrong tool is the easiest way to strip any piece. Ask me how I know.
