997 C2 or C4S
997 C2 or C4S
Hi,
I have been searching for a 997 for awhile and have finally found 2 cars that i am trying to decide between.
1.
2005 C2
Black exterior and black interior
Manual
Mileage/KM: 33500/54000
Exterior is in great shape, so is the interior aside from the usual temp and fan buttons
Options: Heated Seats, 19 inch Carrera S wheel, Three-spoke sports steering wheel in leather, Sport Chrono Package Plus, Bose Surround Sound System, Black Sport Seats, Bi-Xenon Lighting System, Porsche crest embossed on head restraints
2.
2006 C4S
Seal grey exterior and black/stone grey interior
Manual
Mileage/KM: 47000/76000
Exterior has a small dime size dent on the fender that can pulled (no chipping or damage to paint), also the bumper has a bit of curb rash on the bottom, very minor. The interior needs a bit of TLC (centre console flacking near hand brake area, driver bolster showing wear) but overall looks good, just not a fan of the grey and after ten yeas it shows its age more than the black interior.
Options: Self Dimming Mirrors, Heated Front Seats, 3-Spoke Str Whl Multifctn leather, Wheel Caps with Colored Crest, Sport Chrono Package Plus, Navigation for PCM, Bose High End Sound Package, Black Mats - Porsche lettering, Adaptive Sport Sts Lthr Int, Sport Shifter, 19" Carrera Sport Wheel
So I have been going back and forth and its getting a bit silly to be honest. I have driven both and like both equally for what they are. I got a PPI on both and they are in overall great shape mechanically, including compression tests. Cost wise i have been able to get the C4S to only about 1k more than the C2 so really negligible.
For me the thing that I am getting stuck on is the C4S interior (not a fan of the grey, if it was black I wouldn't even be having this issue). Also, the higher mileage worries me a bit for resale but not too concerned, mostly the interior. kind of stupid as I would be all over this car over the C2 if it was a black interior but to me its were you are most of the time and I know my **** personality will end up spending some time and money to make it more my taste.
So am I crazy for even considering the C2? Should I just forget the interior and go for the better equipped C4S with higher mileage or stick with the C2 with less mileage?

My 2c worth. Don't buy a car with an interior you don't like already. It'll always bug you and you'll like it even less after sitting in it all the time. Since you're even considering it over the base C2 I'm guessing you'd rather have a widebody S so I'll say keep searching. You say you've driven both so are you only searching locally?
I've got the same-ish car as the C4S.....except in C2S.
Is the interior full leather? It makes all the diff....I too was not overly thrilled with the color but it grew on me.
There are plenty to choose from out there as been mentioned, but if it's in great shape and PPI gives it a thumbs up, then the choice is yours.
Oh, I would choose the C4S over the C2. If you think you'll hate yourself for settling for the grey interior, wait until you feel the pain for settling for a non-S!

I think you should be patient and wait for the right one to come along. I drove a C2 and wasn't overly in love with it but when I drove a C2S it felt like magic! After I bought my C2S I had a chance to drive a C4S (albeit a 991) and to be honest I wasn't in love with the AWD feel at the limit, though it would probably set faster lap times due to increased grip. Drive a few and go from there; don't settle!
There are loads of these cars out there and there will be even more with the 991 variant available. Like others have said, be patient, "your" car will show up.

I went C4S because I liked the wide body look better and for practical reasons - it does snow here and I want to be able to enjoy it a little in the winter. I don't track it or drive it to the limit so that comparison doesn't matter to me. As above wait for the right equipment and you won't regret it. I've talked to others with a C2/C2S and if they even want to take it around block in winter it's an issue. I like to move it every so often to avoid flat spotting on tires in storage. Haven't experienced it yet and don't intend to.
A GTS kind of bridges the aesthetic/functional gap between a C2S and C4S. It maintains the classic RWD of the C2S but is endowed with the C4S curvaceous wide rear. Its standard X51 power kit bumps hp to 408hp and massages torque to a lower/earlier range. It comes with PSE, which is lovely but will only have you wanting a bit more sound. I had Sharkwerks' center muffler bypass installed, and they hit it right on the button. I wouldn't want it louder nor quieter (beauty is it works with PSE). Also, whichever you choose...if you get a manual..PLEASE get the short shift kit.

My $ .02. Wait a little and get the one that you really want. My recommendation would be to see if you could get into a 997. As you probable know, a huge upgrade in the interiors. Love2drive is spot on regarding the Short shifter, but you can add this for a couple of hundred, also don't worry about the NAV, you'll probably wind up replacing it with a new one anyway.
