serpentine belt replaced after 6years and 50k kms

997.2 carrera s 2010 50k kms. just replaced the serpentine belt and this is my experience.

1. the procedure is very easy and took less than 1hr to do with the basic tools
2. the old belt looked and felt thinner than the new belt but otherwise looked ok with no cracks or frays.
3. turning the tensioner clockwise for me was the hardest part of the job. that thing is tough.
4. the tensioner is not spring loaded and does not return to the tight position. it seems to me that it is tightens the belt via oil pressure.
5. the new belt is a tight fit at first. you need to really push it over the alternator pulley with the tensioner at full loose. Once in you will notice the slight slack in the belt.
6. once you start the engine, squealing noise will be there as the tensioner fills up with oil. squealing is scary at first but a minute or two of slowly revving the engine dimishes the noise until it completely disappears.

the job is actually so easy i start doubting if i did something wrong. hahaha. but a test drive proves all is ok. this can be doen by an experienced tech in less than 30 minutes.

Interesting the difference in the tensioner design and behavior between the .1 and .2 cars.

Some are saying my tensioner might be bad. No squeal, not overheat, good ac... What are the indicators of a bad tensioner anyways?

Who are these people and why are they saying these things about your tensioner? They have some nerve.

Seriously though should check all the pulleys for excessive play (front/back and side to side) when replacing belt

I agree GP, but you know how it usually is the first time you do something , the objective was to install the belt. Before the change there was no no noise and no problem whatsoever. So it was just belt change on my mind. Nevertheless I think everything turned out right as things are well in order. Tight and no noise, from 650 to 4000 rpm with or withou ac...

Okay, just was on Renn. Now I know who the ones are that are saying your tensioner may be bad. You left out a bit of info in this post. I'm gonna go make some popcorn. Later
