a couple of 997 rookie questions

sorry some dumb rookie questions.

1) re: high oct gas.
is 93 oct a must? or just for performance? do i have to buy an additive to add to 91. but from where? help!!

2) re: spoiler.
is it ok to leave it up?
and after 75mph, does it go up/down as you vary thru that speed, or just stay up until you stop the car?

91 is fine, most of have to run that. engine management programs prevent detonation (pinging) caused by lower octane gasoline.
You can leave the spoiler up if you wish. It goes back down around 40mph.

No problem and welcome to the boards.

1) IMO, 93 Octane is a must at all times. If you spend the $$$ on the car, a few extra bucks every time at the pump isn't gonna kill you.

2) There is a button to keep the spoiler up (which I normally have on) but everytime you shut the car, it will be down when you restart it. So it gets to be a pain. I wish there was a way to have it up at all times including when you start the car.

Hope that helps...

I believe he's saying he doesn't have access to 93, hence the question about additives. (which don't work imo)
By all means if you can find 93, put 93 in. Most of us in the US do not have access to 93.

93 is not necessary. I seem to recall some show on TV dynoing a 996 (same basic engine as 997) and showing about a 5hp difference between 93 and either 91 or 87. If you can get 93, use it. If not, don't sweat it, and don't bother with the additives. Porsche tunes the engine to accept fuel of varying quality.

It's fine to leave it up. If you leave it alone, it will come up the moment your speedo hits 75, so naturally you won't see it if you're driving on public roads in the US . It will stay up thereafter until your speed drops below 37 (i.e. 75/2).

actually, there is one location that i know of in northern california, near woodside, that sells 93 octane gasoline. i guess there must be alot of high performance cars in that area or something. but that's the only one i know of.

i personally only use 91 octane from chevron. the engine will adjust itself to lower octane gas and i can't be bothered to drive all the way down there just for gas. by the time i drive back, it would be time to refuel again.

Just buy a fixed wing/spoiler. Up all the time.
