System Fault - Visit Workshop after polishing head lights - DIY fix need help!

Hello all,

So I didn't realize it but apparently the static created from polishing my headlights while detailing my car with an orbital polisher fried something controlling the lighting in the car. Now I have the "System Fault - Visit Workshop" message and my rear taillights stay on whenever the ignition is turned on. Research suggested that I fried the front lighting control module next to the CD changer in the front trunk (part# 997.610.105.04) so I went ahead and bought a used one online. After installing the new module and starting the car up, the front headlights came on automatically and the headlamp switch did nothing to change the function of the lights. So, I swapped the old one back in. This is a 2005 997S coupe, btw.

Could the replacement module I installed (identical part number) be faulty, or does it need to be coded to work with my vehicle? Am I even replacing the right module, or is it supposed to be the rear module under the driver seat? Just trying to figure out how to fix this without paying the dealership a visit. I can get access to an Autel scan tool to check for codes if need be.

Has happened before. Headlights shouldn't be polished when installed in the car. The static genested fries the bulb control module or what's called the front module. Usually results in a lightning bolt error icon in the dash panel. It or they will need to be replaced.

I think they do need to be coded to the car. Depending on the used module you bought, if it happened to come from a Canadian car with the DRL feature enabled, the headlights would be on all the time. You'd need a Durametric Pro or similar to go into the modules and check the coding settings.

Actually, one should never polish plastic headlamp lenses on any car. This can and will damage the hard coating protecting the polycarbonate lens and accelerate the ageing ( yellowing, hazing) process.

Very true. Once polished you have to have them clear-bra'd or they'll yellow very quickly. The clearbra has uv resistance in it.

Can anyone else confirm if it needs to be coded? I might pop into the local dealer and ask for a little free info if they'll be so generous.

Yes, I will be taking them out of the car to do some fine polishing and then clear coated or clear bra'd afterward.

Stopped by the service dept. today; apparently the module does need to be coded. Will try it and follow up later!
