Thinking About Modding My 997S
My 997S is about a year old and I'm starting to get a little bored with it. I've never modified a car before but I'm thinking about taking it straight to EVO Stage 4. My question is what effect this will have on the warranty? The last thing I want to do is to pay for repairs on this car if something goes wrong. What if I go EVO Stage 4 but just with parts and not with the ECU changes? That's probably better in terms of perserving my warranty but would doing that make sense? If I do go EVO Stage 4 with the ECU mapping, what do I do if the car needs repairs under warranty? Thanks for your help.
I can't speak on modding the 997S, but I am well-versed in modding in general. I have had several modded cars and from my experience there are certain things to follow:
1) NEVER mod a new car. Get to enjoy it, learn its quirks, etc. Since you've had the car for a year, you're good there.
2) Consider what you want your car to be BEFORE you start modding. I've seen too many guys start modding for performance, then decide to mod for shows, etc. and they go through a ton of parts and waste a ton of money. If you know you want your car to be a beast, then go to Stage 4 in one fell swoop. It'll save you money in the long run.
3) Remember that every $ spent in mods is a $ lost when you sell it. No one cares how cool your tuner/parts/idea is/was/etc. They just want a clean, reliable used car.
Personally, I have decided to mod very mildly until the car is paid off (and out of warranty). The Tubi exhaust I want will be covered under warranty and the Ruf bodykit is not. Most major modifications will void your warranty or at least diminish your coverage. An ECU mod is a good start because it's tougher to detect than a supercharger, cams, etc. Good luck and post pics when you're done!

Thanks Chris. I just want to mod for power. I'd like my 997S to be a sleeper that can smoke other 997S (and guys in M3s . . . he he). Perhaps I can contact my Porsche service rep and get his take on what I can do and still preserve my warranty. I've been going to him for almost 8 years and have a good relationship with him.

i cant believe you think a 997s will beat an M3...my TT cant even beat the M3...you need to set your priorities straight...hehe
If you want your warrenty intact, then focus on wheels, suspension, and simple power mods like exhaust and intake...your car may not be the ultimate sleeper, but it will suprise anything in the twisites and will look hot doing it.
First of all... I don't know what Stage 4 is, but I assume it's the SC. I'm at that level with Evo. Good stuff. POWA. My Porsche dealership installed it all. I think I may be ok if something breaks, but I'm not counting on it. Do you really care? Really? I mean, if so, then you may consider a Turbo or GT3. I feel happy thinking that the guys in those cars may think they can take me though, which is a true sleeper thing. I don't even have badges and have the new Cargraphic RSC badging coming for the deck lid. Anyways, I got off track. I mean this kindly, but you have it backwards. An ECU by Evo has been done by GIAC. With the Flashloader from GIAC, you can set plug into your ECU and swap it back to stock before going in for service and then swap it back. No biggie at all. I had all this jazz on my Audi S4 V8, as well as many other stuffs. The ECU is the only thing they will never know is there. I think it all comes down to your dealer though. If you have an 8 year relationship with them, you probably could do just about anything. My dealer happens to have all my stock stuff. This MIGHT come in handy in any kind of... blow up... situation... maybe?
In the end, if you don't know what half-a-thousand horsepower feels like in a RWD, rear engined, perfect car... you have NO IDEA what you are missing out on.

The August issue of GT Purely Porsche has a good article on EVO supercharged 997. Horsepower increased to 477, claimed to be faster than a stock 996TTS from 0 to 120mph. They said the kit costed about UK$8700 plus 20 hours labour for installation.
I am quite tempted in modding my 997S, but most likely when warranty is close to expiration. At that time though, the 997TT or GT3 should be everywhere on ebay at a good price...

EVO Stage 4 is just ECU upgrade, headers, exhaust, sport cats and intake. The supercharger is the level beyond that. EVO claims 40hp and 40ftlbs increases at this level for only about $6700. Seems like a a lot of bang for my buck and the demo car sounds awesome. But if it voids my warranty, forget it.
In terms of swapping the ECU program back and forth, as suggested by Blacktout, that's not really an option because in LA, I'm not really near an EVO dealer so that would be a hassle. Can you believe that we don't have an EVO dealer in LA? Sounds like a business opportunity to me.

U boat,
I must have misspoken. You get the friggin remote control! You just change the friggin channel back to stock when you go in. It might take you 3 seconds, drunk, in your garage.
That's what I speak of, my friend. No hassle.

I am actually directly talking about GIAC. However, at least with my car/stage, Evo uses GIAC to make their custom maps of everything. I see no reason that you couldn't get it from Evo with a Flashloader... but what do I know... I've done this with quite a few cars, but not this one. I'm not going to mess around with a forced engines food supply.
