No difference in width between S and non-S. The difference in width is between C2 and C4 - doesn't matter if it's an S or not.

C2's are 71.18" wide. C4's are 72.91" wide.

Oh yes..the C4's rear hips are almost flat on top due to the extra width.

Absolutely. I'm a 928 man at heart, and the main reason I went with a 4 vs 2 was for those extra inches The average joe on the street may not notice, however anybody familiar with the model will/does.

Well I've never stopped to see differences on a C2 and a C4, but when I have them in front of me on the streets I can see the C4 is wider...but a non-Porsche fan wouldn't see that!
IMO C2S is the best choice when buying a 997

want your C2 to look wider? put some 5-7mm spacers in the rear and bring those wheels/tires out a little. get a 305 in the rear as well.

Was the 993 C2S widebody? If so, was that the only widebody C2?

I was responding to a question on the 997 board - you might ask yours on the 993 board or maybe someone else here knows.

C4, C4S & Turbo have the same body dimensions... 1852mm in the back
the C2, C2S are 1808. Like Dave said, 44mm is not much to speak about, but the quarter panels are designed completely different, nearly flat on top. Even though it's only 1.75 inches, it appears much wider because of the quarter design.
