How much off MSRP
MSRP is just a suggested price and not what the dealer pays so discounts are available. Mass believe the stories they are real. Deals can be had because dealers look at their volume out the door too.

Give me the name of a dealer who will give 5K of a made to order car. To me that is absurd. The dealer has no incentive to give that big of a discount on a made to order car. It is the same with BMW and Mercedes as well.

Mass....several of us have tried to help you, but I'm starting to think you are a complete dumbass. Several of us have tried to point you in the direction of dealers WHO WILL GIVE YOU A DISCOUNT. Someone else got 8% from N. Olmstead. They offered me $5k off a 07 C2S order right off the bat without any negotiating. I got slightly more from my local dealer on an 07 custom order.
So you asked for information and got it. If you're going to call us liars, then call up Porsche of N. Olmstead and ask for Chris Sanner or call up Jeff Rapoport from Hennessy and prove us wrong - or just STFU.

I got mine, 06 997S tip in Aug/06, according to the dealer, this is the last 997S tip silver in entire CA, and MSRP was $97K, I got $10K off. I drove 100miles to pick up the car, but it worths it. This is true, and yes, I have talked to other dealer in LA like downtown LA, BHP, McKenna, and they will not offer this type of discount. I guess it is the chemistry whether the sales person you talked to think you are serious, then they will follow up with you in the next week or so. It also depends on how you talk to them when asking for discount. some people said car buying is art of negotiation.

this guy is just upset he doesnt know how to get a deal done..ive owned porsches, bimmers, lexus etc..never paid msrp..never will
buy the first tubo off the lot and ofcourse you will pay full freight..next year you will get nice discounts on turbos too..porsche is turning into a mass producer - its not a limited 6k output ferrari...porsche wants to sell lots more cars - to do that they will sacrifice margins.

That's the problem with opening your mouth on the internet - you can't go back and claim you didn't say something. We got discounts and even told you where and how you could get one too. Yet you go on whining about how you've been to lots of dealers and can't get one.
Who's the whiny ***** now?

Its all about relationships. If you walk in off the street you may or may not get a fabulous deal. If you get to know the dealer and they believe you are a potential repeat customer, they will work hard to earn (and keep) your business. This obviously does not apply to all dealers, but the best will. My dealer came in #2 last year behind mega-dealer Championship.

JohnnyD - I would agree that some (not all) CA dealers have shown to be more reluctant to give discounts to first-time buyers (from their dealership). You are 100% right that IF you want to buy local and IF your local dealer is not willing to deal, you won't get a discount - but those are IF's that can be worked around.
There are dealers in CA who have offered significant discounts. I don't have the names handy, but if you search the 997 forum on Rennlist for threads by me, you'll see a very long one discussing discounts. I collected information on what the discount was and where people got them - they were all over the country. It would be a simple matter to find 3-5 people who got discounts in CA and contact their dealer.
The second workaround would be to order remotely, and have local service done. Porsche of North Olmsted (Ohio) and Hennessy Porsche (Georgia) are both very experienced with selling to remote clients and shipping the cars. They both offer significant discounts.
So while I agree with your logic about buying local, I disagree with your inference that choosing local is the only choice to buyers. In the situation where there was no local dealer willing to deal, I guess the choice would be local vs. discount and each person would have to make that choice.
The last point I'd like to take to task is the implication that we belittled anyone due to their inability to get a discount. I can't speak for anyone else, but the only problem I had was the OP suggesting that those of us who got discounts on new orders were somehow lying or overinflating our deals. I think its pretty obvious that he questioned what we said, and that certainly reduces my desire to provide any help.

Mass,
You asked for people's help and we offered it to you and instead of graciously accepting information from other members you reply as if you are being told fallacies. I am one of those as well trying to tell you the discounts available especially since the face lifted 08's will be here shortly. One of our sponsors Gossett Porsche even had a few left over 06's on their website for 10k off and that's before you negotiate.
If you ask for help then act the way you have I will bet money your time here will be short lived.

Wow I just went back an re-read all your posts Mass,
This seems like 100% the case of you only got 3k off and now you must be pissed that there were better deals to be found, anyway if your intent was for you to make a thread to make your self look like an a-hole I think you succeeded, congrats.

You got a great deal; I paid more than you. Let's just leave it at that.
