High-speed Penalties

Over the weekend I found a wonderful rural road in Ohio. It's well-paved, compleletly flat, nothing around on either side and you can see for miles. So here's my question...

Other than a monetary fine are there other penalties out there such as taking my car or my license for high-speed driving? Just to clarify, high-speed for me is between 100-120. I'm sure to some folks that's just getting warmed up.

I realize not everyone is up on Ohio driving laws, but if you know about any in general or in your state I would be intersted in hearing about them. I've done a bunch of google searches but I must not be hitting the right terms. I'm finding nothing.

BTW, I actually prefer a nice twisting road at lower speeds but those are rare in my area of the state. It's more of a day trip to find those.

Many thanks for any information you have!

In Texas you would get a ticket (fine). I understand that if you had illegal drugs in the car, even if you were not currently using, they have the ability to take the car.

At a certain speed over the limit. I think 30 miles over here in florida they consider it reckless driving and can take you to jail. you would get a big fine but you would get your car back. It is at the officers discretion.

Got a Porsche club near you or any other clubs that do track day's...possibly at Mid-Ohio? That is where I'd do my high speed driving. I do my high speed driving 2 weekends a month at Sebring.

Other than that take a friend in another car and have him run down the highway to scout it out. Put your cell phone ear piece in and go...if he see's a cop coming he can tell you.

Up to 30mph over is a "cheap" fine. I think its less than 150? or so.
31+ is manditory court appearance. Keep ur V1 on for land units and watch out over your head because they use VASCAR on many of the roads.

Here's a good resource for you on all 50 states: http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/laws.html At 100+ in most places there are points (higher insurance), loss of license for reckless driving, jail time, etc. Justifiably so because that's just unsafe for you and the public. You may think you can control the situation because there's nobody else on the road -- but you can't control when an animal jumps in the way, a kid on a bike comes out of a driveway, an oncoming driver crosses the line, you hit a patch of debris or oil, you pick up a nail and lose a rear tire sending you off the road, etc. Even if you have V1, it's may not help at all at those speeds. Then there are the old ways of pacing, plane, Vascar (as mentioned), laser (if you are alone on the road, you are a perfect target for laser as there will be no warning), etc. Want to enjoy those speeds legally? Spend less than $200 a day for a PCA DE and do it safely on a race track. That will cure your desire to drive too fast on the roads (works for me). http://www.ohioinsurance.org/factboo...chapter_6g.htm Ohio - my guess is the can hit you for 4 points for reckless: Four-point violations * Willful or wanton disregard of the safety of persons or property Speeding violations Violating any prima facie speed limit (safe for existing road conditions) is a two-point violation. Violations of the absolute speed limit come under a progressive point system. * First offense: Two points if convicted of a violation in excess of 75 mph * Second offense within a year: One point for each full 5 mph increment, excluding the first 5 mph over the posted speed limit * Third and subsequent offenses within a year: Two points for each full 5 mph increment, excluding the first 5 mph over the posted speed limit

I got a 97 in a 55 in Tift County GA 2-3 years ago. Just a fine- and not even on the spot! It was $1,050. bucks! I was stunned when the operator told me that on the phone. 40 over few weeks ago in Detroit downtown. Going to court soon on that one. Rolled me RIGHT when he merged off the on ramp. No pacing, etc... "Why you doin' 100 on my freeway?!" Didn't even talk to me just my passenger (right side of car) Hit me for 95 in 55.

I've asked three officers on seperate occasions, 2 are friends, where I could go to open up my car without having to worry. All three responed the same, "over 100, straight to jail, no questions asked"... then they lean over and whisper, "go out to Mayfield". I did; it's NOTHING BUT COWS OUT THERE!. Made their point.

Thanks for all of the input and good advice. I just joined the local Porsche club. I'll keep the higher speeds to the track. Never been on a track before so should be fun.

Take the testosterone to the track! The faster I go on a track, the slower I go on the street. There's just too much risk/liability for speeding on public roads, and I've got too much to lose.
