998 - Flat 8 Or Not To Flat 8

Do you think the new chapter of 911's should go with the flat 8 ??? This could be a whole new turning point for the 911. I heard that they were considering the flat 8 even before the 997 was released. I think as time comes closer for the 998 to appear it may become more fact than fiction. Porsche must keep up with the joanses as almost all cars by 2009 will have 400 horses...plus they cant get anymore than 4 liters out of a flat six I heard... I think its time to make the jump to the flat 8, I'm ready for more power. Or am I just crazy??

Seeing how they are pushing 415hp from a 3.6 engine on the GT3 .. I think the flat6s still have some power up their sleaves.

Things are changing in the market. The need to produce more economical cars as well as faster means that the chances are that the flat 6 is probaly more likely to stay than go. I would expect performance upgrades to come on the next 911 from dieting more than from extra HP.

Keep the 3.8L flat 6, use DFI and use current technology to reduce weight of the overall car. This will not only result in a faster straight line car but also a better handling car in the corners.

How many horses can be made from the flat 8 realisticallly for the porsche, it's almost scarry to think of how much power could be on tap, I dont think ferrari or the ugly C6 will have a chance, at all... I would bet that 600 to 650 ponies would be likely... c-ya amg 65...................

i am just gonna wait til it's flat 16 before i make the move.

it's not about the numbers. It's about the balance and performace for Porsches.

One things for sure, its getting harder to justify the price of admission when lesser cars are nipping at your performance heels some for pennies on the dollar.

R8 v10, Dino (if it materializes), v8 M3's, C63's, 500hp Mustangs - tough crowds are forming.

Putting an 8 cylinder engine in a 911 would ruin it. If anything Porsche will just have the new 928 with a V8 engine so if you want a big heavy car with a big engine you can have that. If you want a real sports car that does more than go fast in a strait line you have a 911.

Value is always something that can be questioned when it comes to performance. But you can't polish a turd in the case of certain cars.

If this year 3.6 seconds 0-60 is the benchmark when will it end? The price of admission for the P-car has always been high. Think about the dollar value in 1996-1997 on the 993 Turbo-S. It wasn't cheap in those days and it would be astronomical converted to today's dollar.

The old saying still applies - "You have to pay to play"
