Porsche nav works, but it is well known that german Nav systems are the bottom of the gene pool. Most of us don't realize how poor it is because we have not had any better. Almost any aftermarket nav is better. The best factory nav is in an Acura. Touch screen, intuitive, easy to navigate. It is too bad they don't out source that piece.

i agree with Dr. Peter this system seems to work for me when i had nothing to compare it to, but my fiance' has the lexus navigation, and IMO its 10 times better than a porsche navi. What about that chrono lap timer, i cant figure the thing out. It distracts me more than anything

This is my first car with integral navigation, so it's impossible to compare it to other automotive systems.

It performed better in the European environment for me than it does stateside. Real-time traffic advisories work well over there and aren't subscription only. Roads in the USA are wholly different than over there. (Often there IS no alternative road to get someplace).

One glaring error in their software tells me that they hired morons to code this thing. Latitude/Longitude inputs. The entire aviation industry, and the entire military and civilian world inputs coordinates with the LATITUDE first, followed by the LONGITUDE. Only in a Porsche is it reversed!

Do yourself a favor, and don't use a Lexus or Acura GPS, so you don't know what you're missing.
Those systems are SO much better than what Porsche uses....

**** I guess I am the only one that thought the BMW navi is better than the Porsche and MB version. Did you guys upgrade the BMW software version? The perspective (bird's eye) view was great and something MB and Porsche don't have from what I have seen...

I believe Lexus uses Kenwood (or at least they used to) and Acura used to use Alpine (not sure anymore).

I have a Kenwood--awesome, it's all integrated, it plays DVDs, has and iPod connector and if you ground the parking brake wire you can enter in information while moving (and watch movies).

I use my BMW Motorcycle Garmin unit. Came with a dash pad (that doesn't slide), and a power cord/speaker combination. Don't have to pay the cost for the Porsche Upgrade DVD, or the PCM up charge. Updates are better through Garmin (my home location is not on most integrated application, and the area is 4 years old, but not a problem with Garmin). Since this one unit moves between motorcycle, 997, and truck, the cost to upgrade doesn't seem as bad.
I would really recommend the Garmin 376C unit, which includes weather data (additional XM cost, best for major trips), XM, XM traffic and the normal GPS stuff (tracks, etc). You can download to your computer when removed from the car, and plan trips as well. The Weather data will be overlayed on the GPS screen, showing what is happening as you travel (miss that hail storm!!) That unit will even work in your boat. Current pricing is around $700.

With the stand alone units, you have a better line of sight, with the unit on the dashboard.

They also have their drawbacks. Speaker on power cord ends up down in the passenger footwell; unit should be taken off the dash when parked, and placed out of sight.

i agree, aftermarkets work better but i LOVE the integrated look.

the newest PCM 2.1 Nav DVD is muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better than any previous versions. The POI's are much better, updated, more of them...the roads are updated and theres more info on city's as opposed to 'city center' option only on a lot of cities before.... the newest nav dvd is 10.2006, although firmware has to be updated (easily via cd rom you put into the music slot on the system...although porsche charges an hour worth of labor for it, i obtained the cd!) i urge you to update if you havent already. PM me if ur interested in it.

It usually works, although yesterday "she" tried to send me South when I knew I had to go North.

When I went North anyway, it picked right up as if it didn't miss a beat... *****.

Good thing I knew which end is up!

Other wise, it's good.
