help the "newby"

Ok, I have the possibility of getting a '66 mustang. From what i hear is that the 3 speed auto that comes in it doesn't get to great of gas millage. The car has the 289 v8 in it. I was wondering if there is a 4 speed overdrive transmission that can replace a c4. I'm not the greatest smartest person in the world when it comes to cars so please don't jump down my throat for this "beginner" question. =)

Thank you very much.

Yes you can change out the trans to a automatic with a overdrive. If it was me a I would change it to a 5 spd it will make it worth more in the long run. Just keep the org. transmission so if they want to put it back org. they can. If you go with a 5spd run a tremac tko500. Let me know if you have any other questions.

You want to change the transmission to get better gas mileage? Seems like you would have to drive a lot of miles to make that swap economically efficient. Particularly since you don't sound like you are going to be doing the work yourself. If you're that concerned about mileage, maybe you should consider something besides a '66 Mustang?

If I do get the car that is in the future haha, but this is going to be a first car and a daily driver so I don't think that much power would be good. Might just stay with the 3 speed, we shall see.

With the 289, I would keep the 3-speed.

Do not buy this car if it is going to be a daily driver. You do not want an old car as a daily driver. TRUST ME!

Any reasons behind this statement? Not trying to question your statement, I am just wondering why.

Because after owning old cars, and restoring them to be modern cars...I know how COMPLETELY unreliable they are. Even if you re-do everything (as i've done w/ a few cars).

Old cars and efficiency/daily driver aren't cheap. Expect to be 20-35K into a project before you are getting 25-30mpg and are comfortable driving it for 3-400 miles on a single trip. (That's if you do most of the work yourself)

Not really looking that great of mpg just looking for a little bit better than with the 3 speed but from what people have said it sounds like it will be better to stick with the 3 speed. Also, at the moment I'm not planning on any 3-400 mile journeys. Again thank you for the information.

Yeah, when driving a old car as your primary driver........it's always best to have

A) A good mechanic, nearby if you're not so inclined

B) A second mode of transportation....even if it's a beater or a motorcycle, etc.
