2010 Camaro SS
2010 Camaro SS
I was just in the new Camaro SS tonight. I didn't get to drive it because I was in the middle of watching the UFC fight at a bar. I did get to turn the car on, and rev the engine, and check out the transmission shifting action.
The car looks good (even though it was yellow), and the interior seems to have been put together well. The lighting is interesting, with a nice touch of some bluish lighting on the inside door panels. The seats are comfortable, but the bolsters seem more appropriate for fat people. The gearbox feels good from 1st to 4th, but not sure if I like the way it shifts from 4th to 5th (feels like 5th is a bit too far to the right). The clutch feels nice and light. I don't like the steering wheel. The center area feels too concave, and doesn't give a positive and comfortable feel in the 3 and 9 positions (like you would hold the steering wheel on the track). Its a pity. It does sound great, and has a redline of about 6250-6500. It also doesn't feel like it has a light flywheel. The revs rise and drop quite slowly.
Its big and wide, with quite a bit of presence. It would have been nice to have driven it, but the timing wasn't right. It has 427bhp, and will cost about $35k. A loaded car will be about $37k. Alot of bang for the buck. I just wonder how it will handle, though it has to be said that it has an independent multi-link suspension in the rear (unlike Mustangs). I did take a few pics, but they are not that great as it was dark outside (and I don't know how to host them...)

Yeah it looks cool, and sounds great, but I guess what you want it for. If its just a daily driver and not much else, I guess its not bad. But I would be hard pressed to choose it over a 370Z. Yes the Z has less power (but also weighs quite a bit less, so I am not sure how much of a discrepancy there would be in terms of power to weight), and is far less practical, but it would be a lot more entertaining in a back road. Also, the synchro rev transmission works flawlessly if you want it on, and can be turned off if you don't. To me, the SS is a modern muscle car. It has the looks, and the grunt, but it doesn't have the agility. I asked the guy who drove it (one of the execs at MI), if they were planning on developing something with more power to compete with the higher horsepower Mustangs (Shelby's, KR's, Supersnakes), etc. etc. and the answer was no. There is definitely a price difference between the aforementioned cars, but it seemed like they were focusing more on the Volt. <shrug>
