I faced a similar decision 5 years ago. Having spent a ton of money maintaining my German cars over the years, and knowing the LS7 is one of the sweetest engines on the planet, I went with the Z06. Smart move. 5 years and 15,500 mile later, all I've had to do is change the oil and replace those Goodyear tires. I plan to drive it more in a couple of years. One sweet car.

I've got an 08 Z06 in Yellow (apparantely the fastest color) with 22000 km and have not had even one issue. I'm not really a vette fan after owning a 64, 67, 76 and the worst 79........but the newer Vettes are not only the best bargain on the planet but is also a fantastic car. I've added Mishelin SS tires and an Akrapovic exhaust and a MGW shifter and I am thrilled with this car.....

I've owned mine for nearly a year, drive it every day to work about 35 miles round trip, take it to the track and go on cruises and have 33k miles on it currently - No problems. I say go for it.

With the LS7, some have experienced problems with the heads.
Others have had reverse gear issues.
Overall I think they are the most economical to own for the horse power, torque and performance in handling.

It's great to hear positivity towards the z06. I am planning on purchasing one within a couple years. Does anyone have any experience with twin turbo'd vettes? Is the LS7 a strong enough block to handle big power or would I need to be looking for one with an LSX swap, also, how are the stock transmissions holding up to big power when built?

Boosted 427

Be mindful that when Chevrolet made the ZR1 the block they chose to S/C was the LS3 not the LS7. Im sure the engineering was well planned out for it.

Good point, wasn't this due to cylinder wall thickness? LS7's is thinner correct? Is the LS3 capable of holding 1000+rwhp though? All the big power builds I'm seeing for vettes are LSX!

They have also continued use of the LS7 in the new 2014 Camaro Z28 so I don't think they thought there was any issue with it..

LS7's are not ultra boost friendly. That's why most go with n/a cam and spray, vortech, or ditch the LS7(the resale value on a good LS7 is pretty high because of the cost of a new long block from gm) and go Lsx, 454, etc. tranny will hold up to a certain degree but stock clutch will certainly not. Most look to rpm transmissions for a fully built trans if going high horsepower.

I love the Zo6 and dollar for dollar it's thes best supercar value out there.....but just look on corvette forum and you will see all the threads about engine failures. It's a know issue and unfortunately gm hasnt been good about addressing it and has probably lost future corvette buyers because of it.

Thanks for the advice! Yea I feel that either a highly modified LS3 or a LSX is going to be the safest route for me. Yea I've heard of some engine issues in certain years. But like you said, it's a phenomenal car for the money. And being able to run with 99% of the supercars out there isn't such a bad thing either. The only thing I've seen consistently beat a well built TT z06 are UGR and heavily modified GTR's. TTG will come after the TT z06

I have had 3 Z06s - 2001, 2002, 2008 then jumped to the ZR1. the '01 was one of the first built and had incredible issues but GM was awesome and flipped me into an '02. The '08 Z06 was much more refined and just a great car all around. I moved into a 2010 ZR1 which is in another league, actually felt softer than the Z06.

But then practicality set and I needed a back seat, so I had to sell the ZR1 and got a Ferrari California

If I had to choose I think the '08 Z06 was the most fun for the price. The ZR1 at 121k was hard to justify the difference in price. Yeah now I sit in a car at 3x, but still loved that '08 Z06.

z06 reliability

Some issues with the heads. Some with reverse gear syncro. You will be hard pressed to find a better handling, more horse car with 26-28 hwy. Fun factor is awesome. Every car has its list of issues. Its really hit or miss.
Make sure when you first get it - to ensure the dot is red when you kill the ignition, not amber (accessory) it will drain your battery. Good luck. 46k sounds fair, the longer you hold out the more prices will drop into winter months, especially with the new C7 available.
