Has anyone gone from 6 speed to tip, any regrets?

I'm 99.9% sure I am going to get a Turbo coupe but can't decide if I want another 6 speed or a tip. Must be getting old, I have been considering getting a tip because of convenience and supposedly it's quicker. My 997S had a wierd hesitation on acceleration that was caused by the ECU learning my driving habits and I couldn't stand it. Add to that the variocam kick and you get a double whammy with a hard launch. Would love to hear from the rest of you "old guys" with tips.

If it is a driver, I would go tip. It will launch harder in stock form and give less issues.

I had all my 911s in 6speed and this time i ordered the 997TT in tip. I'm pretty sure i won't regret it since its going to be faster and more convenient. Since all my other cars are auto i am just getting lazier and lazier.

Wait for the PDK version, best of both worlds

I almost went with the tip, but with the PDK around the corner, I'm not sure how the resale values of the tips are going to fare. So just to stay on the safe side, I went with the 6-speed. Before my decision I did a lot of research on the tip, though (mostly on Rennlist), and it was all good.

Had a tip, dont do it

I got one of the first 997TT in July of 06. Sold it and get a 6 speed in March of 07. I had the same issues you did. Always in the wrong gear with the tip, I would step on it and it would not accelerate right.
Like the 6 speed now, will never buy another tip. I ordered a Smart car to drive in traffic.

Robert, are you sure you didn't sustain a head injury with that crash?

At one point the only car I had was a Cayenne TT. I figured that I would not miss the 1-clutch-1-clutch-1-clutch driving on the Stevenson and the Eisenhower...but I was badly mistaken. Although the tip will be convenient, I think you might end up missing engaging the gears the old fashioned way...just my 2 cents...

Oh...and congratulations on deciding on a Turbo...but, why not a cab in SoCal?

Regrets, regrets, regrets...I have a 2007 Tip. It has a mind of it own...upshifts in corners, does not perform as described in the Owner's Manual as it may or may not start in first when the sport button is depressed, responds sluggishly to accelerator inputs, tries to upshift on rather steep inclines, etc. Fortunately, my build slot is reserved for a 2008 and this car will be a six speed. Faster? I cannot discern a 0.3 second difference when accelerating from 0 to 60. Moreover, this 0.3 second differential requires torque braking and waiting for overboost which ensures you will be staring at the tailights on a modified Honda Civic. Just my opinion...

I can't understand why Porsche would program the Tip to start off in 2nd gear (to improve fuel economy perhaps?). Perhaps one of the aftermarket tuners could get in there and come up with a solution.

I chose manual for 3 reasons...and after driving my friend's Tiptronic, I'm convinced these three reasons were right.

1. Unless you are drag racing every stop light, the launch advantage of the Tiptronic is negated by it's poor gear selection during regular driving.

2. Unless you are power brake launching, which is really really bad for the transmission, the 0-100 acceleration won't be a huge difference.

3. After months of tuning, EVOMS still doesn't have a solution to inconsistent power delivery on Tiptronics equipped 911s...see https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...nsistent+power

Thanks for the comments guys it really helps, I guess the tip is not all it's hyped up to be. The clutch on the turbo feels so much nicer than the clutch on the C2S anyways. So 6 speed it is, now if I can only decide on a color. I looked at slate and it was a little too brown for me, GT silver looks great but I can't do silver again. I am leaning towards meteor gray. The search continues......

Initially I was looking for a turbo cab but the more I looked at them, the more I didn't like the way they looked. It's just too damn busy. There are a few available and they are only about $5-10k more but they don't look right. I'm looking forward to some peace and quiet anyways, cabs are noisy on the highway with the top up.

I use my 997TT as a driver, so i couldn´t stand manual. The tip is much better than in the 996, but it does not fascinate - it´s doing its job, that´s all.

But it will start in first gear in sport mode, once you´ve been over 3.000 revs in sport mode. Check it out!

But i agree - i desperatly waiting for PDK!!!
