Infineon weekend: Good fun, but got wall rash

Had a great time at Infineon last weekend with the Audi Club. I did a best lap of 2:02 (not sure if that's considered good or not).

On the afternoon of the second day, however, I severely overcooked the entry into the hairpin and glanced off the tire wall. No bent metal, but it left quite a bruise.

Ouch! Definitely could have been way way worse. Props to you sir for having the rocks to track the beast...... track racing really is a "pay to play" sport.

looks like that clear bra took the brunt of it. Some careful detailing and I think all of it will be gone

It will buff right out...

Now strip that thing down and make it an official track car?

Glad it was nothing more. How were the PCCBs on the track?

I did some test spots with tar remover, polishing compound and also tried paint thinner. I do think that 90%+ will come off, but I have several spots where the paint is scratched pretty bad and a couple of edges with bare metal spots.

I am very happy with the clear bra durability-- it only wore through on the very edge of the fog lamp, but held up on the rest of the bumper.

Two hours of detailing will make it look fine from across the street, but I suspect it will take a $2K+ spray to fix it right.

The PCCBs work great on the track-- no fading issues I can detect. I don't have much basis of comparison to the Big Red steels, so can't comment there.

That was quite a bit of understeer. Did you brake or try and ride it out?

Chris,

ditch the cups for Hoosier R6's, and also align the car the Gt3 specs and you'll never plow the nose like that again. Even R6's alone will feel like you put adjustable sways on the car.

Maybe I should get a track car, but then I'd need a tow vehicle, etc, etc. I like to "drive what you brung," and then set PASM to soft and cruise home.

I was definitely braking HARD, I just stayed on gas too long and ran out of room. I compounded the error by putting in clutch (reduced braking power) and also by letting out the clutch in lower gear (chirped tires, inducing a slide-- I can't heel-toe). I may have had a chance if I left in gear, ABS braked until I had 10 feet left and then turned hard. Even with my msitakes, I would only have needed 6-12" more track to still have a pretty car! Oh Well.

On the Hoosier/alignment point, I hear you, but every setup has it's limits and, with my personality, I would be compelled to find them. Not sure if that's a good thing at the end of the day.

Probably not a huge factor in all of this, but my MSPCs were at the end of their life (remaining tread was starting to delaminate), so I might not have been working with full grip, even given my rubber and my camber.

Bottom line: I overdrove the car and got in over my head.

Ouch, it's hurting my eyes to look at it.
