New Owner... few questions
New Owner... few questions
Hello Everyone,
I've been looking on this great forum for a while now... and i finally picked up a 997 turbo this evening. Gotta say, the car is amazingly fast and handles like no other.
However, i gotta few questions for you guys...:
1)should i generally let the turbo warm up in the morning before taking it out? Basically, letting the car idle for a bit.
2)does any one have any pictures of their 997TT w/ aftermarket wheels but w/o changing the suspension? I plan to get a set of wheels, but i really prefer not to touch the oem suspension. Hence, if the car looks okay riding on the oem suspension, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

I personally think that the best way to look after the engine from cold, is to NOT let the car idle for a time before you drive away. The reason for this is bore wash. That is to say that the mixture is so rich with fuel on cold start, that it is theoretically possible for the rich fuel mixture to wash off the lubrication from the bore walls.I normally set off and drive away as normally as possible. The main thing to do, is watch the oil temp gauge, and let that get up to normal operating range, before using any performance. But, i always let the warm engine tick over for a couple of minutes before switching off. This is to let the turbos slow down, as they can spin upto 100k rpm, and if you suddenly switch off, with the turbos at that speed, there is no lubrication, and you can end up with shot bearings in no time at all.Its just careful attention like this, that imo, helps look after your vast investment, regards, SIMON.
I will be installing 19" HRE P40 wheels on my stock suspension TT coupe tomorrow. I live in Yorba Linda, so you are welcome to come by and see for yourself how it looks... I'll be posting pics if the wind drops below 80 MPH anytime soon.
I agree on the quick drive off - especially in our relatively warm SoCal climate. Allow the oil temp to get to 175*F before romping on it

I generally let my Turbo warm up to the 170 degree range before pouring it on. That's a good rule of thumb to live by.
Here's a couple of pictures of my Turbo before I installed the suspension upgrades

I would say that you don't need to let the car idle for a while. However I would not drive it hard until it was warmed up. You can just get in and go out driving normally. Typically after about 5+ minutes of driving it should have warmed up enough.

Did you have any trees go down? A few of my palm trees no longer look like palm trees. The winds were crazy last night. Did you decide on an exhaust yet?
"It will scrape". I'm already lowered w/ springs but may do Damptronics in the spring.
