Operate the shifter in a car without sport shift.

There's a pic on he porsche web site. A short shifter moves about 2-3 diameters of the shift ****, regular looks like quite a bit more.

Mine came with the short shifter so I have never driven with the standard unit. Mine is a very short throw, however, and is quite notchy and mechanical. I love it and can't imagine it any other way.

Not to go too much OT, but what other short shifters are available besides from the one that Porsche makes? Where can I find them? How hard is it to install, on my previous cars I could install them right from the cabin.

Why do you think the car wasn't as ordered? I believe the SSK is option XCZ - look on your list of options - it should be there.

How hard is it to install, do I need to get underneath the car?

I had a B&M on my C5 Z06 before, I LOVE the short throws. But it was really notchy and required alot of effort to shift, also to move from side to side was really stiff as well making it hard to get into reverse. Is it different on the Porsche?

its notchy, but side to side is fine. no need to go undercar, all done from in cabin, center console is removed though.

If its notchy then most likely you got it. To my understanding the GT series cars come with a slightly shorter throw. This could be why you couldnt tell when comparing to your friends 7 GT3.

Standard> GT series cars> Short throw

Something like that.

Look at the sticker--but beyond that if you had a 996 with the regular 6 speed YOU should notice a big difference in your new 997. I had an 04 tt with reg 6 speed and got a 08 tt with factory short shifter. Night and day. I must not understand your question cause the answer is obvious IMHO
