1st gear and break-in maintenance
Hello all,
my first thread LOL. I picked up my Turbo 2008 meteor grey last of the GT1s, and have now about 300 miles on the odometer. I'm following the manual break-in and keeping her under 4k while alternating my shifting as much as possible in accordance with the manual. (2000 miles is a long time to wait sheesh...)
Does any one feel like 1st gear is so short as almost a useless gear?
I mean is it because the turbo is new that she lags so much???
Power really starts at about 3k and then sling shots so rapidly (throttle response) which worsens if sport button mapping is engaged.
I love my car. I don't want any one to think I'm disappointed. This car has been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old. Seriously. I only want this car and wouldn't trade it for any other exotic Lambo or Ferrari if it was given to me free. I never drove one. I never test driven one either. I bought it flat out in the faith that I knew she would exceed my expectations.
She has. this may sound corny, but I actually have to see her before I sleep at night. I walk into the garage (its attached to my home) look her over, smile, and then I go to bed...LOL

What dealer conveyed to me
I was told by my dealer (GM) to keep it under 4200 RPM for the first 1200 miles. I hear of a lot of mixed opinions versus what the manual says. I too have accidently gone over a few times to 4500 RPM's. I hope it's okay as I have less than 200 miles......it's to easy when the turbos start to spool up at 3k RPM's and you want to go faster.

I am going to open up pandoras box and raise some skepticism on the 2K mile rpm restriction . I even will question whether someone who drives his car under 4K rpm for that length of time (2k mi) and then decides to dramatically change his driving style is posing more engine risk than what I am about to suggest .
I feel that any new car owner ought to pamper the car at first so that he can learn the basics of that vehicle . I also feel that the car is also adjusting to the driving style of the owner . For my 8 Porsches which have been new I tend to pamper the car with an occasional sprint . In short --I bond with my car.
The manufacturer's warranty concerns are naturally part of their best interest . The owner has these concerns as well but from a different point of reference . 2K pampered miles reduces a lot of financial worry off a 50K mi 4 year warranty . Especially if it can take some people 2 years to get to 2K miles . If your car breaks in the first two months it's a little different than if that issue comes up after two years --even though warranty covers both .
Questions you asked
1) 1st is a short gear but it becomes like second nature .
2) The lag can be addressed with an ECU flash and a few mods . It wil also improve with time and cool /dry climate .
No worries -- enjoy that car !!!!!

It took me over 1 year to get 2000 miles. I broke in the engine according to my above described regiment. I have had P-cars for over 25 years and I believe care should be taken over the first 2000 miles.<O

The last four new Turbos that I have purchased performed better than similar cars that were not broken in using my method. <O

If you are not a believer, just take a look at some of the videos of my car running against cars that have far more HP.<O

every motor builder I know says drive them like you stole them. I've never believed in keeping it under XXXX RPM. I make sure to fluctuate RPMs and not keep them constant as this helps the motor seal better IMO. That said, I usually don't redline till 500 miles or so.
But motor motors that are broken in on an engine dyno have the living **** beat out of them.

I can appreciate those feelings - I just hit 3100 miles on mine - which I got in April. Wish I had the time to drive it more than I do - can't get enough. My dealership mechanics said not to worry about the break in and to just go drive it. Hurley Haywood (one of my instructors when I was in Birmingham) also said it is not necessary and he has been driving/racing Porsche's all of his career - said he has never broken one in according to the manual. What did I do, I broke it in according to the manual just to be safe, and changed my oil after that first 2000 miles! Who knows...better safe than sorry.
^^^Wait til you get to hit that "fun" button - you won't believe it. I pushed mine for the first time on a spirited drive with fellow NW 6speeders (my car was just under 2000 miles). I pushed it right when I was giving it full throttle going up a small hill - I felt like a rocket - I thought I was going to launch right into space. It is unbelievable - I keep it on all the time now
Sounds like I'll be calling this button "afterburners"... hehe
Can't wait...if I understand it correctly it remaps the ECU throttle response and adds boost PSI right?

You folks are saying that you cannot use the sport chrono for the first 2000 miles. I've been using it pre 300 miles to see the difference in suspension and power up to 4200 RPM's. Is this a bad thing pre 2000 miles?
