Road & Track comparo
Road & Track comparo
I'm surprised there isn't much on here or any other Porsche Forum about Road & Track's comparo. I guess none of us are really surprised. Probably much more going on about it over at NAGTROC.
retarded
no one posted about it (even though the porsche was #1) because it was stupid move on their part to pick the manual.
I think there was one sentence in there about turbo lag ... duh get the the pdk then.

I was thinking that maybe they were trying to show that the 997.2 TT was awsome even in the "old fashioned"
manual trim. Or, I could be wrong. Perhaps they will come back with a test of the PDK version, driven by Walter Rohl, and wow us with the performance.

Just read the article...What is the issue with the stock steel brakes starting to fade on the race trade after only 10 laps??
Very surprised to hear that about Porsche brakes...even on a twin turbo
That can not be right

Yes, and they basically say that the 997.2 manual was solid across the board subjectively although not a real winner in any category except .... fuel economy?? Why handicap it with no PDK?? Soft brakes?? WTF???
im a big fan of the gtr but im super impressed with the 997.2, but on this day the gtr was the fastest around the track the fastest 1/4 mile. The gtr went 5ft shorter in the 80-0 and went 1.8mph faster thru the slalom and finished 3rd!! I mean the test was about 3 top sports car and witch is the best, not witch one changed the most. I will say i def agree that the gtr takes away from the driving experience somewhat but that "boring"experience is just fast in every way!
They said they wanted the most involving configuration, so that involves manual gearbox and a 3rd pedal. And the Porsche won, price being no object.
It's like the media have done an about-face. For the better part of a year the GTR was all anyone could talk about - the downsides were there, but no one cared.
Now Porsche has come out with arguably the best version of a dual clutch gearbox thus far, and they don't want to test it! Instead, they now show the 911TT winning for the exact reasons it should have won a couple of years ago. The 997.2 should now be winning for all of those reasons plus the fact that it is superfast with the PDK.
The last couple of R8 reviews I read also bashed it for not having DSG... and they were testing a manual... Makes no sense - just selling magazines. Like Bill Maher remarked yesterday about the Time magazine cover...

"The previous-generation 911 Turbo could be a bit of a handful on the track, the rear threatening to snap around if you over-drove the car. Porsche worked to address this issue through new suspension tuning and a smoother distribution of power between the front and rear axles—and it works wonders. You still have to respect that engine hanging off the back, but you no longer need to drive with guarded enthusiasm. 'I used to find the Turbo moved around quite a bit in high-speed corners,' said Elfalan, 'but somehow Porsche has removed all of that through some suspension retuning magic.'
Also helping here is Porsche’s new torque vectoring rear differential ($1320), which applies brakes to the inside rear wheel to minimize understeer."
The old car was noted for odd transitioning of understeer and oversteer with load changes, which Randy Pobst found when testing at Laguna Seca, and so did Horst von Saurma during the supertest.
Also, last time the GT-R was on the faster of its 2 summer tires. And it's not 6 points out of 400 total possible points is that big of a deal.
Oh Guibo, don't sweat the small stuff.
I know there are a lot of Porsche nuts out there who actually enjoy learning to control a monster who threatens to snap out on you if you let your guard down. They actually enjoy a challenge and do not consider that a bad thing. There are those who feel that Porsche electronics are already interfering too much with all the fun.
