Track day tires?

Hi all,

I’m in need of new tires and wondering if I could get some first hand experience. I’m considering:

1) TOYO R888s

2) Pirelli P Zero Corsa System

3) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup + N1

I drive to and from our local tracks which are both less then 70 miles away. The car does not get much use around town but will do occasional weekend trips (300+ miles). Thanks!

How many LS and SP days were you able to get out of them? Shaved or unshaved?

Get a spare set of wheels and dump Hoosier R8's on them. They are the ultimate semi slick (though they push the definition of semi slicks very, very far)....

Thanks, just picked up my car yesterday with a new set of rims and tires...Michelin Pilot Sport Cup + N1 on all black RS wheels 8.5 and 12’s. Also, dumped my ceramics in lieu of AP Racing CUP Rotors with yellow Pagid pads... hitting Laguna Seca tomorrow!

We weren’t sure what size Hoosiers would fit on my current rims (CMS RS171’s/ 8.5 and 11.5) without rubbing because of the offsets and Hoosiers tend to run larger then they say. Next set will be Hoosiers 245/35 & 325/30’s looks like they will fit and clear everything nicely with the RS rim set-up.

What size tires did you go with and is your car lowered at all?

mate, I am using 18's for the track- not my original RS rims.

running 245/30/18 front and 315/30/18 on the rear (on 18x8.5 up front and 18x12 rear- OZ Allegerita HLT's). My car is lowered and running above average neg camber for the track (around -2.7 on the front and similar on the rear). Zero clearance at these sizes but I am pretty sure diameters are a little smaller on my set up- and I am running narrower tires than you are looking at for the rear.

Have fun at the track and safe driving! Cheers

I use sport cups N0, all summer long + lots of track. They will last 7-10k miles easy, never really get hot enough on the street to wear excessively. Remember N cups are not the same as the old 'real cups'.

Just checked my Tires...they are N0's...what is the difference between N1's and N0's?

First session out the car was very scary and I had zero confidence in it...too many new things all at once (rotors, pads, tires, rims/width, and tire pressure)! I took it easy for the first four laps to try and finish bedding in the brakes and getting heat into the tires. Going into turn 3 at speed on the fifth lap, I went to hit the brakes an I thought I was going off. Turn four was okay, its fast with very little braking needed. However, 5 in my car I can come into it around 115-125...again got on the brakes and thought I was going to go straight into the kitty littler. Tires were awful as well...very squirmy, greasy and they had a mushy feel to them.

I was so upset with my car and thought to myself, “what the f@#$ did I just do to my car, I completely ruined it and wanted to sell it”

Second session was much better. We increased (yes, increased) the tire pressure and I did a little brake dragging on pit out and through T3. By the time I got to 5 the brakes were up to temperature (well close) and felt quite good. Tires got better as well.

The day continued to improve and I left feeling confident with my vehicle, decisions, investment and upgrades. So I’m not sure about my tires, were they old and just needed to be scrubbed in really well...or was it the increased rim width and side wall flex compared to what I was previously running?

The Cups have fairly stiff sidewalls, so you don't get a lot of flex there. What sort of hot pressure did you finally settle on?

The tires were brand new and probably still had the mold release agent on them. That would account for the poor adhesion at the beginning. Brake pads and rotors weren't bedded in either. Two strikes right there.

I started off at 28 front and 33 rear (warm)... we added 4lbs after I came in while they were hot... like an idiot..I forgot to write down the hot pressures...thought I could remember it for later...

Like I mentioned earlier...too many NEW things all at once...although it all worked out in the end. I just needed to bedded and scrub everything really well.
