2011 GT2RS vs. 2010 458 Italia

After almost 5 years I'm crazy bored with my daily driver 07TT Tip and miss my 03 6speed X50. Have realistic opportunity to obtain a new 2011 GT2RS with just delivery miles (asking $229K) or a used 2010 458 Italia with approx. 10K plus miles on her but mint (asking $245K). All the magazine reviews I have seen basically say that the GT2RS is a better investment, but just can't seem to better the 458 on the track. I'm not looking for a track car or I'd buy a used Cup car and trailer her to DRE's. rather I'm looking for a daily driver that I will realistically have for 5 years and put approx. 5-7K miles on her per year. I know that I'm essentially killing the cars value by driving that many miles but I just don't care. I put approx. 10K miles per year on my 997TT tip but with the GT2RS and 458 I'd probably not drive them in the snow/rough weather and stick to my wrangler. As a daily driver is the GT2RS an impossible car ? Is the used 458 a no-brainer ? While I don't care about the investment loss from driving alot of miles I do want some excitement back in my daily drive. I was going to get a 2012 TTS but cancelled the order as the car just doesn't give me the excitement factor I'm looking for. I'd appreciate any suggestions from those that actually own a GT2RS/458. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Have you driven the TTS with PDK? Have you tried the launch control on it??? For DD that would be the best choice but I'd go GT2RS over the 458. From what I've read and seen the GT2RS will take the 458 on the track but that is moot of you.

Good luck on your decision!

My 2 cents
1. Cost of ownership in maintenance
2. Overall reliability
3. Do you or do you not want to row gears?
4. Ride quality
I steered away from F cars due to #1. I drive a GT2 daily and really enjoy it. There is part of me that still wants a PDK transmission. Lastly, even though both are >$250k cars I'd still feel more at ease parking a GT2RS than the 458.

I agree with DocGTO...in this case, don't make a monetary comparison because the 458 and GT2RS are 2 really different cars, even if they cost about the same amount. A Turbo S will run right along side a 458 and still give you the comfort of a daily driver, without the "supercar" stigma when you park it somewhere. Most people will walk right past it...

If you absolutely won't reconsider the Turbo S, then I'd chose the 458 over the GT2RS. It's an amazing car to drive, and the trans would make it very manageable on a day to day basis. The GT2RS is sort of "raw"...it might leave you missing some of the creature comforts and "luxury" (for lack of a better word) that you get with the 458.

Thanks for the pearls of wisdom. For the record, the 2012 TTS while an awesome car, looks and sounds pretty much like my 07 TT Tip. Although the TTS will destroy my car in terms of both power and handling, its basically a similar ride to what I have now. As for the TTS launch control, its pretty much useless as far as a DD accoutrement. I mean nobody uses launch control at every every single stop light, whether in a TT or 458 or GTR. I have not heard anything positive from a GT2RS owner about it being a good DD, but I have spoken to more than 1 458 owner who do really enjoy their rides every single day. Maybe the answer lies in the 991 Turbo, but I doubt it. I just hate to settle for a TTS when I already know that its just a rehash of mine with a way better tranny. My #1 issue is that the TT just doesn't sound great anymore - at least not to me. You listen to a 458 and it makes your heart race. The only Porsche that sounds even halfway decent to me is the normally aspirated GT3RS and then I'm getting a common car that performs no better than my TT as a DD (at least for my driving that I do). I'm truly torn here.

For excitement I would go with the GT2RS. I have personally not warmed up to non-stick cars yet.

Plus at least porsche drivers try... The prancing horse although the prettiest one i have seen in a while is defined by the word pretty. I know there are prancing horse driver that can and do drive but most are the I have it because I can people.

I like the sleeper value of the GT2. If you know cars you know what it is and thats why your jaw drops. Not because of the badge

and then there is this LOL http://www.insideline.com/ferrari/45...ver-fires.html

Based on what you've written it sounds to me like the decision has been made. Pls post pics whenu get the 458 in the garage. I agree that you already have a 911 Turbo variant, time for a change. I certainly wouldn't consider te 458 a downgrade.

^^^^ While I have not been able to own or drive either that you are looking for it definitly sounds like you are looking for something quite different. The 458 would definitely seem to fit that bill.

Wait for the 991 turbo and you will have 3 cars to choose from. I feel that it raise the bar substantially. I'm sure you have an idea of the maintenance costs on the 458?

No clue as to 458 maintenance costs although friend just got a new 2012 458 and it included the 7 year maintenance program. It might make sense to just order a new 458 and wait (could be 2 year plus wait). I can always sit on the 997TT I have until the next ride comes in.

I have a GT2RS, it is a great car but really not suited for snowy weather or rain either. I would rather have a RS than the 458 . The maintenance cost on the 458 is too steep for me. The 458 is a beautiful car and makes all the right noises but the RS to me is better. The TT is better for a DD.

What is the price difference between the 458 that you are looking at and a new one? Obviously wait time could be a while. Drive your friends Car a bit to see if it strokes you in all the right ways.

Keep the Porsche and get the 458 on top of that. 458 Italia is not a daily driver and you may find yourself struggling leaving it places and taking it places that has never been an issue for you with the turbo.

There is a very good review of the 991 on autocar.co.uk. Secondly, the ride of a 2007 is very different from a Turbo S or any new 2012. My 2012 TTS is much smoother is every respect compared to my 2008TT. Finally, another choice is to find a low mileage GT2 add CO's, an ATB/LSD diff., and then a power upgrade. My GT2 is 95% completed after an extensive build and I rank it as my all time favorite ride. It too is smooth after the build, shifts fantastic with an upgraded clutch, handles like a dream, and the power...thats another story .
