Tip advice
Tip advice
I need some advice on a 997tt Tip. I currently have a 07 997tt manual. I've recently have my fifth knee surgery on my left knee and my shifting days might be over. Most of my driving is suburban / city so lots of traffic and stoplights.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

How is the Tip? As a manual only guy will I hate the ‘slushbox”? I know the only real answer is to drive one but I have not been to my local dealer. Any advice or help on the Tip would be appreciated.<o

This is not a manual vs. Tip thread; it’s more of a Tip vs. wait for PDK thread. I’m not sure my knee has much manual city driving left.<o

I went from a 6 spd to a tip. I love it for driving here in Houston. There is no way I was shifting as fast as the tip either. Only down side I see is when passing someone fast, you really want to hit the down shift button twice. This will get you in the right gear to hammer it. If you only hit it once you screw yourself. Not that it wont get the job done. You just don't blow their doors off.
I get better MPG with my tip too.

Owned race clutches to BMW SMGii ( one of the better SMG's) I love my TIP. That whole starts from 2nd in causal driving is unnoticeable. It allows you to keep both hands on the wheel when you stomp the go pedal.
Currently the autos are faster than a manual and getting even faster. So you can fake push a clutch in and move your hand while you blow past anyone in the way.
frankly as a daily driver I think you are losing some of the fun of DRIVING the car focusing on shifting. Thats what makes me like the tip so much. I can truly enjoy the fun meter of the car.

I went from a 996TT 6 speed X50 to a 997TT tip and have to admit that it was a massive change. At first you will miss the involvement of shifting the car, but that feeling will dissipate over time. The truth is that for 99.999% of us the auto transmission will make us faster, both on the street and on the track. For most high end sports car manufacturers, manual trannies will be relics of the past in a few years. I think PDK is a whole different level that the tip transmission, but I don't see why you can't enjoy a 997 tip for a year while your waiting for a 991 Turbo or for 997 TTS prices to decrease. The 911 Turbo character changes depending on whether you opt for the tip, PDK or 6 speed tranny. I strongly suggest you check out all options for more than just a test drive before pulling the trigger.
First thing you do is change out the steering wheel to the FVD paddle shift wheel. Put it in manual w/ sport on. The closest you will get to manual shifting. It makes all the difference in the world on a Tip.
The chrono sport button really sharpens up the up and downshifts of my tip, not to mention that my tiptronic was rebuilt my Renntech and flashed with EVOMs Tiptronic TCU software. Really responsive and over engineered trans; so it handles plenty of beating..
