997.2 Turbo // PDK vs. 6-Speed?
997.2 Turbo // PDK vs. 6-Speed?
I test drove a 6-speed 997.2 Turbo the other and the acceleration was amazing. It didn't feel as nimble and have the steering wheel of my Boxster S, but it's still a great car.
Now for my question. I would not even consider a PDK.
I was looking at some 1/4 mile times and I see that the PDK Turbo reaches the 1/4 mile in 11.0 @ 126mph.
I've been searching for 6-spd 1/4 mile times, but haven't been able to find any information. I'm curious as to how much slower the 6-speed is to the PDK.
Thank you.
***UPDATE***
I don't think I would ever have an automanual because 6spd is always a lot more rewarding and fun for me to drive.
The reason why I ask about the 1/4 mile time is because I would want to have the astonishing straight-line performance as the PDK at the least. I'd also like to be able to know what hp kit I would have to go with to have my car in the 10's. I'm thinking the 600hp kit might do it, but the 650hp kit looks best since EVOMS had a cab run 10.9.
Ahhhh, I've watched that video a few times back but never noticed that it was a 6spd. Thanks a lot! That's exactly what I was looking for.
Wow, 11.2 @ 125.3
vs.
11.0 @ 125.4 (PDK). Looks like PDK just has a better launch of course. I'm surprised that the 6spd went that quick especially with a 125mph trap.
So basically the 997.2 is .6 seconds quicker than the 997.1. That is due to the extra 20hp/extra displacement, slightly lighter weight, and?
With all the improvements on the 997.2 Turbo, I think I would be better off. I don't think it would be that far behind in terms of the performance:value of the 997.1.
Even though the GT1 motor is bullet-proof in comparison, do you think the new motor (997.2) would have a problem handing 650hp? I don't think I'd go any higher.

For feel and pleasure, the 6speed is the way to go. If you are concerned with speed and being the fastest, the PDK will win EVERY single time (in stock form).
When I drove the PDK in Vegas at the track, by looking at my videos, the PDK was going only 1mph slower than the Aventador at the end of the straight...the PDK is fast - plain and simple. In a PDK with some miles, you can see 130mph traps...that is nuts.

. For me, 6-speed is more enjoyable (which is why I have one) while PDK is more efficient and quicker. Personal choice.
Here's my evolved opinion ---
When the 997.2 came out I bought a PDK 997S and drove it for 2+ years . I also drove and almost bought a 991S and the main feature which has been so improved is the new gen PDK .
It was enough to ruin my 997S and i no longer have the car .
I also havea Turbo and it is a manual . For years I had watched the PDK cars in amazement until NOW .
I feel the wise move is a manual on a 997tt and my reasoning is that it wiill never seem dated in the same mannner as the PDK .
One other thing .. The 991 comes with a 7 speed manual and the location of the shift lever on the console is (in my opinion) ill fitting . The traditioanl 6 speed on the 997 is actaually a strength . The negative is the awful power assist clutch .
But overall the manual gets my vote based on where Porsche seems to be headed with these newer 991 cars.

You will be hard pressed to match the PDK even in pretty heavily modded stick shift.
If buying a stick you may better be served with the 07-09 model. The GT1 Mezger engine is much more stout and race proven. According to Champion Motorsport the rods in the 997.1 are about 25% stronger than the rods in a 997.2. maybe Porsche is starting to figure out that the bulletproof engines were making it so easy for people to keep modding their cars to keep up with the production HP increases that they weren't jumping into the next model as readily.
IMO PDK is the only reason to pay the big bucks to upgrade to the 997.2 (2010+ model)

A quick manual gearshift takes around 0.25-0.3 secs! With a WOTBOX or flat shifting feature inbuilt into the ecu it can be slightly quicker than this still.
Got a video of a WOTBOX car flatshifting, and everyone swore its was a dual transmission car!

So about 1/4 mile in about 11.5?
I really like the 997.2 all-around. Anyone know a good site that lists all the changed for the 2010 Turbo?
Let's say I go with a 997.1 with a 600/650hp kit, what will the 997.2 have over the 997.1 in terms of performance? (besides displacement)

I recently upgraded from an 09TT 6spd to 11TT PDK, while I loved 6spd, Im unable to drive it as well as I used to since I injured my right elbow months ago playing *****... I find that Im driving my TT more in downtown traffic vs my 6spd, the 09 while in my possession logged ~8K in 2yrs and I just passed 2K in my 1st month with the PDK. The 09 was tuned with lots of aftermarket upgrades but the PDK is just stupid fast and with a tune, it's game over...

Great post! Very true. I have had several manual turbos over the years and prefer the PDK in the turbo. Rocket fast gear changes. I am fortunate to have the best of both worlds. I never enjoyed shifiting in older turbos as much as I enjoy shifting in my GT3RS. That RS engine is something else. I Iove my GT3RS but I love my PDK turbo too! Very different cars though. Nothing quite like the explosive PDK though. Except maybe shifting gears in the GT3RS!
BTW .. if you read the very old journalist articles back in 2006 they were even chosing a Tiptronic over a manual for 0-60 times . No one wants a Tiptronic today because its dated , That's my point . Driving a car knowing that a highly sophisticated component is that much inferior makes the choice TODAY a dealbreaker for me . However if we were discussing these cars in 2011 instead of now I woild have agreed with you 100 percent at that time .
Very good points Larry. Always great to hear from someone with personal experiences with both manual TT and S PDK cars. The Tip TT is definitely an example of how the latest and greatest technology has rendered what was fairly recently highly touted, to now being somewhat archaic. BTW I really like the way you have outfitted your TT. (How's the daily driving going?)
