Suspension Mods.?

Finally added some suspension work to my car.

Toe, Chamber, cross chamber, castor are just some examples of things I need to learn quickly.

Drove the car for a few laps at the track and felt the car under steer "a lot".

I understand that this is the biggest complaint with the rear engine config but, the car just wanted to keep moving in a straight line. I would hit the brakes to transfer the weight but, it wouldn't help much.

Here is what I recently had installed.

Someone more knowledgable can chime in...but from your list I see that you got springs, sways and end links. All typical mods, but why the REAR lower control arms (and shims and spacers)? For more rear neg camber? You can already get neg 2 wo the rear LCAs. Usually folks get the front lower control arms and shims to give more front neg camber (increase front grip and turn in). You can get a stock neg 1 in the front but people use top mount or front LCAs to get neg 2-2.5. If I were to do it again I would have added Tarret top mounts for an extra neg 1 in front.

If you're under steering, what alignment specs you get? Perhaps the front bar is on stiff and the rear is on soft (or not connected).

This is where I am currently at. No lose bolts on the rods. I checked them myself. "doesn't say a lot but, rather they are, connected and they are installed."

Alignment specs look good. Hmmm. Everything is bolted tight, but how's are the front/rear bar stiffness? Stiff front and soft rear will under steer. Soft front and stiff rear will tend more towards oversteer.

Hey brother. The cup arms are installed on the front, not the rear. The rear cup arms are the right length to use on the front of the TT. Out of the box the car is set up with strong understeer to be on the "safe" side. It's always better to have it understeer rather than oversteer initially. We can fine tune a lot of that with the front and rear bars. You gotta get the tires scrubbed in a bit to get a better feel for the car. Brand new tires, especially street tires, will need a few sessions to start feeling normal. They are slippery and will understeer initially. Be patient. Come out next Friday and let me or Chris get a few laps in the car with you and see where we're at. Were gonna be there all day Friday setting up for the race. I hear the understeer comment all the time. That was my complaint initially until I figured out how to rotate the car with Chris's set up. I sort of had to relearn how to drive the car again. Trust me, it's gonna be a fast set up but initially it feels like you're moving backwards. You alignment is about the same as mine except I have more agressive camber settings. Your car will feel great once we get it dialed in. Heck, I found out that the times Chris and I ran last Friday were good enough to break the NASA TT1 lap record at HPR held by an ACR Viper....I broke it, he shattered it. So you have something to shoot for Btw, I think you said you ran a 2:05 that day. That's friggin fast on fresh street tires. Trust me...

Hi, your part list in first post shows gt3 front sway bar. Did your tuner modify something to make that fit? To best of my knowledge, gt3 front sway bar does not fit 997 Turbo.

loosen up the front sway bar and stiffen up the rear bar. front will have more roll in turn and car wil rotate much nicerinstead of pushing the front.

You and Chris ruled the track last Friday. I definitely have some more fine tuning to do. I need you guys to drive my car.

Great question. Why wouldn't they fit? To much extension or travel? I'll be glad to ask.

That's the change I was thinking. With stock suspension I could feel the rear kick out and sink just after the apex. This worked well for hard turbo acceleration out of corners.

Yes please ask; I am very curious. I have GMG bars so do not have direct experience with GT3 bar, and anyone pls correct me as needed, but I have never seen anyone on this forum able to use GT3 or GT2 sway bar in front. I suspect because GT3 bar has different shape/length/mounting points, etc., from Turbo. IOW it's a different bar for a different car.

From the camber setting, your car appears to have quite serious tuning done for the track. You prefer the H&R softer spring for a reason I assume? I know you didn't ask for my opinion re. spring rate, but stiffer spring reduces body roll, hence reduces upward movement of outer wheel in corners, hence reduces the camber gain with this upward movement (this is why we need negative camber - to cancel out this positive camber gain in corners); in this aspect, at very high speed cornering such as at the track, stiffer spring will help maintain traction because the camber change won't be as much, and IMHO might be something that you might want to consider. Pardon me if any of this discussion is old news to you; just trying to help here.

Update:

Soften the front sway bar by one notch. Car feels absolutely amazing. Except from my tires not gripping, car holds very well. I have to give credit to Pwdrhound and the installer. You guys have a slight clue on what to do with these cars.

Sorry Cannga, I haven't been able to obtain the answer to your question yet. Pwdrhound may know though. I took a lap in a few different cars this weekend and I think I will be heading in his direction.

Not to mention, Pwdrhound was the fastest at the track this PCA weekend!

Very nice! I'm glad you are moving in the right direction! I'm new to the 911-platform and I'm finishing my suspension build soon. I expect that, similar to you, once I get to the track I will be needing to fine-tune to get it dialed in. Keep us posted on your progress!

Glad we're getting it sorted. I suspect that once you switch to grippier tires you'll be back to doing some fine tuning. Tires will change everything. That's what I'm dealing with now. Car felt great however. Great job in the times runs. The GT3 boys have their work cut out for them. The chase is on for that elusive 2 min mark! Now we need to find some tech geeks that can disable the PSM on your car.

As far as the sways someone asked about, you have OEM 997 GT2 sways front and rear with front Tarett drop links. No issues.
