Montana Registration/License Plates
Montana Registration/License Plates
I'm taking delivery of a new to me 997 Turbo next month and it's the most expensive car I've purchased to date.
In Georgia we pay a one-time tax called TAVI (Ad Valorem Tax Fee). For the car I'm about register I would pay about $3900 up front to register the car.
It would seem that I could register an LLC in Montana and pay about $800-$1000 for everything.
Does anyone have any experience doing this? I've already read the 'risks' but I want to know if anyone has any real life experience doing this and if you would recommend it.

I don't recommend it, maybe for a valuable classic car that is rarely driven. For it to work properly, the car needs to be stored 6 months in Montana. Even if you did go through the "process", I think you become a target with out of state plates.
I live right outside of a large military base. We have plates from all over the country, and I know half the police force. I'm not worried about that part.
I just want to know if anyone has experience with being accused of 'tax evasion'.

Long story short. man registers car in florida to get cheaper insurance. Car is based in NY 100% of time. Car has accident in year 3. Why is Fla Car in NY? Upon further inspection, car was never in Fla. Insurance company asked for any repair docs, oil changes or service in Florida ever? None to produce. Insurance co says this is fraud..... Accident covered after many sleepless nights (and fighting back and forth) and man dropped from insurance. Insurer seeks to revoer monodies for the difference in rate between NY and Fla due to fraud and case is dropped but no fun to deal with.
Not worth it in the end. If you play you need to pay. Sorry just my 2 cents because I know the man.
Good luck.

I talked to a Montana lawyer, very nice guy. He basically explained that in order to do this legally I would need to keep the car out of GA for 6 months. It really defeats the purpose of buying it if I can't drive it. So I will pay the $3900 to register and tag.
I own a home in GA and was (previously) stationed in OK, where I purchased the car and registered it for one year. When I moved to OH, I dropped in to GA to ask about registering it there, and same experience. $3000 for a car I'd already owned over a year, paid sales tax elsewhere, etc. Needless to say I found another option. My insurance company knows all about it and charges me the OH rate. Don't fear the man, the man needs to fear you.
