997TT Manual Transmission and Differential strength

In the 996tt gearbox everyone knew that after 700wtq or so shearing 3rd gear was basically a matter of time along with some other issues that plagued that gearbox such as 2nd gear pop out, 5th gear synchro and wearing of the 4 point bearing into the retaining plate. I know a handful of people who broke every tooth off the 3rd gear in a 996TT including myself. Most people use the 997 GT2 parts or GT parts from Matt to upgrade the 996tt boxes. None of those parts fit in the 997tt box. My 997 is making power in range where 996tt gearboxes were beginning to show fatigue so I am wondering what issues (if any) some other have ran into.

I have also seen a lot of talk about the cast 997 spider gears in the Diff being weaker than the 996 and an inferior design.

Has anyone broken the 997tt manual gearbox ( gears or busted cases) OR the differential?

From what I understand people are upgrading with GT2 gears.

GT2 gears do not fit in a 997TT box, they only fit in a 996TT box. In order to do that one would have to use a whole 996TT box. When I had the 997 box out it looks like it has stronger cases tho.

to me those cars are more like unicorns to be honest. i never seen one, i never seen a legit dyno. i know they are very FAST from what I have read in magazines, but idont know what they do for drivetrain if anything at all. this thread is basically an open discussion for just that.

if you have a 6spd 997.1TT and its been running hard on stock gear box with big power you are certainly welcome to come in and say he i got 800hp and my gearbox still hold. I know Enzo just went 196 1/2 mile on a stock drivetrain car.

even the 996tt boxes are hit or miss too, my 3rd gear broke when i was making 900rwhp and i drove that car hard. one thing i learned is its MUCH cheaper and easier to upgrade before stuff breaks, because instead of just replacing the weak links you will be replacing a ton of other stuff that got taken out by the failure.

I am curious on this too.

The thing I find with drivetrains is it is SO dependent on the driver and tires (grip).

Dont put TOO sticky of a tire on it, dont launch it every time you drive it.. and granny shift a little when you dont need every bit of the car.. makes a huge difference.

My stock Z06 trans and clutch was still holding strong after 30K miles (~70K total) even with 625rw. Most people said I wouldnt make 70K miles on a stock clutch with that power.

The only time it was an issue was at the track. Launching it was just too much. as long as it was a 1st gear roll, clutch never slipped. And I only WOT shifted it if I needed to (racing people)... which wasn't all that much in comparison to the daily grind on the car.

Stock gear box, not a problem with 4k miles over 8xxrwhp. 2 step launchs and brake boosting never had an issue, knock on wood. I havent put a stick tire on the car but, she hooks pretty well on the Invo's. I was going to do the 996tt but why change a working gearbox.

yah man i thought about it too. when i was doing the clutch and 997 box was out you can really tell that they beefed up the cases vs the 996 box with additional and thicker webbing.

does your car have the LSD or an open diff?

The weakest link on a high power manual is the clutch and the driver dropping said clutch. If you upgrade it, which most people do, you are reducing wear on the tranny. In other cars with high RWHP guys stay stock till it breaks then change it if its required. There is a guy in AZ that can beef up your tranny if you want. He does work on 997s and 996s

yes obviously a stock clutch is the weakest point. i'm talking about 800+ hp cars which have the clutch upgraded or it wouldnt be possible to make that power in the first place...

staying stock until it breaks is only an option if nothing is currently available but if there are stronger parts available that is a stupid option since when a weak link breaks in the tranny it takes out a bunch more stuff with it. instead of spending 3-4 upgrading you spend 3-4k just to repair and another 3-4k to beef up the parts.

And someone just told you that he was over 800 and on the stock part. I just told you there is a guy that will beef it up. I think most people are going with the stock only option. As if you looked at the guys like Switzer and alpha with over 900 HP packages, right not RWHP but its going to be up there, they are not offering anything for a Transmission upgrade.
Which is interesting because I think the C4s and Turbo have the same part number on the tranny

yeah so am I.... that doesn't mean it will last. just means it doesnt break right away. my 996tt tranny lasted for thousands of miles at 900whp before 3rd gear broke.

a guy in arizona? never heard .

that doesn't mean the car doesn't need it. you are worried a loose vacuum line is going to blow your motor on stock turbos but think tranny is OK at 800+ hp.....

that is incorrect the C4s tranny is completely different.

99730001050 is the 997TT for non LSD cars. Change the 1050 to 2050 for LSD cars. the N/A cars p/n ends on 01 or 31 rest is the same. it cost about $5k less

honestly i don't need you to do any research for me especially after your hissy fit in that other thread, because unlike you i am aware of using a search function and google. i also know all the major Porsche tranny rebuilders like Roger at CMS (californiamotorsports), Matt at Guard, Bill Rader at BRM, Brian Copans at BMC&G. Guard who makes aftermarket gears for Porsche used by most reputable builders doesn't make them for 997tt yet.

im looking to hear from guys that have done it and like Swole Powell say yeah mines good after such miles at x hp OR the flip side yeah mine failed after so many miles and here is what broke.

I wanted light mods. So not understanding your point.

Your lost 3rd gear? Humm. Given your power when where you shifting?

You ever talk to Roger? He said he would do my 997. I didnt throw a hissy fit you did. You couldnt grasp that I was asking about the newer tuners. In your world no one would dare to post a new thread after a " compare Dinan vs JimC's Shark" for BMWs. Even though things change.
