Question on PCM, AUX and Bluetooth
Question on PCM, AUX and Bluetooth
Hi Guys, had a few questions regarding the subject. My 997.1 TT has the PCM3.0. I LOVE to listen to my music on my android base phone (LG G3). On all my other cars, the AUX is a separate button that is dedicated to whatever is plugged into the aux port. On the Porsche, however, the aux is based on a FM channel. This drives me crazy since you have the hiss that comes with idle FM channels. So my questions is this:
* Can the AUX be programmed on something else other that FM? possible CD?
* I also considered bluetooth, tooki specifically, but I heard that the product is only good for voice calls and not for audio as not all speakers are utilized during audio playback. Is there other products out there that integrate with the PCM 3.0 that can be installed so I can listen to my music via bluetooth and not aux cable if desired?
Any and all input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advanced guys

Are you sure you have PCM 3.0 and not 2.0? If 2.0 Dension is a very good product. You'll read many post regarding the product. Follow the instructions to install and it will work just fine.
I believe 3.0 which is 997.2 has bluetooth sync

Yes, I'm sure I have PCM 3.0. This was verified by the dealership when I brought it in for service. They also said up at the latest version as well but I have never seen any Bluetooth sync when browsing the PCM.
PCM3 as in the '09 .1 cars does not have Bluetooth audio. It's a weird omission since there was the Bluetooth phone option. I use the hardwired interface for iPod/iPhone which works fine and sounds better than Bluetooth, and far better than FM modulation.
It is possible to convert a 997.1 to PCM 3.0. It's not cheap, but it's possible.
I still have PCM 2.1 in my 997.1. I use the Mobridge M2 Pro system and it is fantastic. It looks like an OE installation, the sound quality is fantastic either through Bluetooth streaming or wired connection, and the head unit controls the songs, displays track info, etc. It connects directly to the MOST fiber optic ring as opposed to an FM modulated unit.

It seems that the consensus is that a 2008 997.1 should have a PCM 2.0 and not a 3.0. Perhaps the dealer made a mistake in telling me what I have.
With that said, is there a reference guide/chart on the software version and what it correlates to? When I scroll through the PCMthe following is what it reads:
Software version 4
Unit: PCM
Target: 05395BD1 / 4505
Actual: 05395BD1 / 4505
Entered: Yes
Found: Yes
Maybe someone out there can reference that?

Actually PCM 2.1, not 2.0. 2.1 is DVD based, 2.0 is CD based.
Maybe it's software version 3.0.
Maybe it's software version 3.0.

So doing a quick search, I found this link on rennlist:
http://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/251378-a-neat-trick-ascertaining-your-pcm-version.html
If your PCM software version is "05024xxx" you are at PCM 2.1B, and this is the most current version. You should be at this version if you have a 2006 997.
If your PCM software version is "04202xxx" you are at PCM 2.1A, and this is not the most current version, but the prior version.
If your PCM software version is "04035xxx" you are at PCM 2.1, and this is not the most current version, but the second removed version (prior to PCM 2.1A).
If you want to use the latest version of the Navigation DVD (labeled 04.2005 or higher), you apparently need a software update to PCM 2.1B.
Since my version is not listed and is higher than what 2.1 is listed, I can only surmise that I'm on PCM 3.0
Am I right to assume that?

A picture of your car's audio panel, AND that Aux button, would help.

I am not sure if there is an aftermarket components I stalled shallows for AUX input. The AUX input is located in the arm rest compartment and selection is done through the PCM.

Maybe others could chime in as far which one it is that you have - I do not know. BTW, I believe both of the conversion kits often mentioned on this forum, Dension and MoBridge, have the true high quality, hardwire connection Aux input that you are looking for. For sure there is one in my MoBridge.
Although the phone function of my MoBridge is perfect, the audio is not (has a faint beeping sound) so if I have to do it again, I probably would pick Dension. But keep in mind there are people here who have problems with Dension too - nature of these complicated aftermarket mods, and the reason why 2009 997.1 Turbo is more desirable with its PCM 3.
Cool..Thanks for clarifying this mystery for me. The hardware AUX cable works and it's pretty good it's just when there's no music playing that's when I hear that faint hiss. It does a pretty good job but just wanted to see if there was an alternative. I find it amusing that for a $140K car in 2008, it doesn't have this basic feature while my 08 BMW E92 has for half the price. Go figure.
I believe you have the Porsche FM Modulator option. It was a later device used for Ipod interface. It will charge your ipod and you can use any other device using AUX. It's a direct to the FM.
