997.1 Turbo Manual Tranny and Diff oil change question
Hi guys,
Those of you who have done this work yourself, did your drain plugs (or fill plugs) have the aluminum crush washers from the factory? I have done this work before in a number of vehicles (non Porsche) and always replaced the original washers with new ones.
This Saturday I decided to replace all those fluids including the controller box and NONE of the plugs had washers installed. In fact the shape of every plug was tapered....as if it was designed to NOT have a washer at all.
I went ahead and installed the washers anyway just in case someone had messed that up, though I find that hard to believe as everything appear as if it had not been touched from the factory.
Thoughts?

Just did mine two weeks ago. Was also under the impression crush washers were needed. When I went to remove plugs, I also found that they were "tapered" and had no washers installed. I reinstalled without washers, and no issues yet.
Thanks. I saw that DIY. It indicates the "replacement" of the washers but I had nothing to replace to begin with. Same as "Thered300zx" also discovered during his.
Have to be very careful changing up the fluids....especially on the transmissions. If you create any differences in viscosity or other variables you will have all sorts of issues with clutches slipping and/or incorrect valve pressure...Just FYI.
Not saying you cannot use a Mobil 1 product, but make sure whatever you use has exact specs.

We have a great amount of DIY tech articles that can help with any future DIY work that you made need help with. It's interesting about the crush washers. I may have a tech look into writing an article about this exact thing. Thanks for the info!
