Halp!!997.1tt cooling leak after turbo install, any ideas??
Hi everybody having a bad week with a small thing that blow in my face to a big thing!!
the turbo was taken off by me to rethread the header to turbo connections...
No leak from the turbo itself.
I'm afraid I pulled on one of the turbo cooling lines from the engine getting the turbo off but it wasn't a straggle like what they write here and on other tech sites so not sure...
the cooling water comes out after a few seconds not right away..,and from the top, right, and back side of the engine around were the turbo auxiliary water pump and "plastic" t piece is,but not sure if its that or the other line(don't think the line itself broke in the process) Already put the car on stands to pull the engine down a bit(done it a few times....)and pry my fingers in and check for loosen pipes what do you recommend me doing doctors..?
Could the other, cooling return line be connected to the infamous problematic cooling elbow sharkwerks makes replacements to..??
Posted on rennlist a swell
Thanks

Do you have access to a borescope? It is possible you pulled the fitting. If so its going to be a pain with the motor In the car but it can be done. I'd borescope it and see what the situation is.
If you need to access those elbows you'll need to pull the intakes and you may be able to push the line back on and tighten the clamp.
Honestly if that's where the leak is indeed coming from your best bet is to undock the engine and perform some pinning and updating to those elbows.
Good luck I just had my turbos off and they are a pain to get off without straining the lines a little.

Thanks, good idea with the scope Ron!! much easier with that especially if the pipes just came off and ill need to reconnect them, which will be hell.!!
Need to order the elbows.. Do you think it's the same ones made by sharkwerks..?
Thanks

Yea the elbows that feed two lines
Go to the turbos if I remember correctly. There is a set for sale in the classifieds I think prodigy (Marc) has a set he didn't use.

Ron,your the man..
The pics helps and puts every thing in place. Thanks!!
Will take alook this afternoon, and will post some pics and I hope a sentence.. still hope it's not the elbows..!
Thanks
Oren
I Went to have a look yesterday, and had all the flashlights, mirrors and selfi poles I can find.to try and see anything inside the fricking engine cabinet we call bay.
Turn the car up and started looking for a leaking hole somewhere.after a few min of looking,i sew the leak was gone all around..(literally started dancing!)
Many thing went throw my mind on how and way this is possible but the fun only lasted a minute wen I decided to top the coolant.......!!!( o,no hope the pump I installed last year is fine after a 30 min semi dry run!!)
So I'm back with the rags, turning back all thous flashlights looking for that "bloody"hole agin, and this is where everything went sideways in my brain.
The right elbow where i think my leak was coming from is dry with all its line and could not find the hole anywhere(yes,i ordered a endoscope!!)and the coolant was still coming from the back right side between the oil tank and center of block dripping between engine and gearbox..
And more weirder is the leak didn't stop wen I turned the car off like before.(cap closed naw its opened)
Any ideas on the new situations..?
This got me thinking its expansion tank maybe,do to the rapid speed it came out..??
I know there is places on the block that have "canals" for the coolant to flow in off the engine,is there one right under the oil cooler..?
Already planing a full drop and picked up,sparks, coils and more..
To think of it I installed the crazy hard to do,silicon hoses with no drop 2 mounts back, and could save me a big pain and a good few hours...
If the coolant lines haven't been pinned, and you plan on keeping the car, my advice would be to drop the engine and do it all properly.
Will be doing a full drop next week, unless ill see its a small fix with a borescope, then ill do it in January(im supper busy now...)
Got the coils/sparks already and just ordered the sharkwerks elbows from prodigy mark, and will do a pin job to all problematic pipes wen engine is out and do a full check for cracked ruber lines and check on all vacuum lines.
What other mod/fix do you guys recommend on doing (my car is a 2008 997.1t tronic..)when engine is out????
Thanks

January? It's August right? Well if I can be of any help let me know I've recently gone down the road your about to embark. It took me 21 hours to do all you have mentioned above plus I did a bunch of other stuff. But I am assuming your not doing it as your too busy. Hopefully that bore scope helps also pull anything off the top you can. It's gonna need to to come off some point.
A long ball end Allen on a ratchet helps getting to the 6mm bolts for the intake

Thanks ron,
I've looked at your threads and you look like precession maters to you, thats cool, and having your mind around for help is even cooler...!
i Will be dropping the engine next week for sure(lifting is no problem and won't cost me..) if its the elbows or anything that's demand a full drop... Mostly because,t im not sure I need too yet. i was not able to see any coolant leaks at the right elbow or any drops around that immediate area(weird!?!?),and a lot came out from top right next oil tank(not far and where it would have gone to...)meanwhile to me,it seams like ,some rear right coolant line that got loos(pin job)or a tear,or (after reading here..)an expansion tank or line leak,do to the amount and speed it came out with cap(blue) off.. so I guess meanwhile im dreaming for my endoscope to arrive before elbows will..!!
Im like at 80/20% sure I'm having a drop...and I will have all the coils, plugs and elbows ready anyway in few days, for worse case....
What other coolant pipes you know of that can go bad, next to the oil tank..???
What ales you suggest on doing wen its down...?
im pretty handy, and my car is daily driven and has 50k on her(she needs it done),so ill do the drop and goods anyway and take my time on her,wen ill have some time to enjoy it..... ;-)
Here's an example (from my car) of a leak at one of the elbows off the oil cooler that was not evident at all until the engine was dropped. It has clearly been leaking for a long time, just not enough to be visible with the engine in place. All three had been leaking to some degree.
One coolant pipe had also started leaking, and another slipped out of the casing when touched after the engine was dropped.

I'm a student of this platform. It's something I love to learn about and someday hope to learn as much as some around here have forgotten.
Something to think about is applying no more than 10-12 psi to the coolant system while your in there with your scope and you'll be able to hear it and see it.
I'm pulling vacuum here I pull the coolant through the system. When putting the engine back into the car do this test prior to buttoning it all back together as to remedy any fitting that didn't get the proper attention.
