help me choose! 997.1 Turbo vs GTR vs ZR1?
help me choose! 997.1 Turbo vs GTR vs ZR1?
hey guys! hope you can help me choose which car has good reliability and mod friendliness looking for a platform to build a 1000whp car reliably. was also curios to the limit of the 997.1 turbo block? thanks guys
Easy decision.....997.1TT. But hey I'm biased. Don't bother asking on vette and GTR Forum, they will tell you 997 :-p
Right after this, go to a Dallas forum and ask them which professional basketball / football team to cheer for.
Reliable 1000hp. Are we talking to the wheels? or Flywheel?
The search function I am sure would yield many different answers to what you are looking for. But to just humor you a lot of people would say that the stock rods being the weak point in the block would hold around 600-700tq depending on the tune and dyno. Some will say less, some will say more.
You can pretty much get all 3 cars to 1000hp pretty reliable, as reliable as a 1000hp car can be. What you need to do is drive all three and decide which one you like to drive the most.

Its not horsepower its torque that imposes limits. There are guys on here pushing well past 800whp very reliably. GTRs can't do that on stock engine and transmission. Not sure about the ZR1. I do have a special spot in my heart for vettes though and no love at all for the GTR. Very different cars though a 911 and a ZR1.
zr1 engine is a tank with the factory TI rods. I'm not sure how much power it can hold but i hear a lot.
i'm currently cross shopping these cars as well and i'm probably going with the 997 and here is why.
#1 the vettes total build quality does feel sub par and it will try to kill you every time you push the go pedal especially with 1000hp
#2 the gtr's traction control system is so precise any mods really make it go wonky. that and i don't want a paddle gearbox that and i personally don't trust a thing nissan makes anymore. The mid 90s infinities were tough to kill but now everything seems to have an achillies heel.
#3 997.1 Awd, standard transmission and i think it's lighter than either of the other two. Also the visibility i feel is infinitely better than the other two. the downside being the clutch delay valve needs to go and the weird inexplicable 12k mile spark plug change i still don't understand.
#4 If i were you i'd also throw the gen 5 viper into your mix as i know they'll make 1000+ hp on low boost turbo setups and the stock trans will hold it but since 1 and 4 don't have any provision for a back seat i'm not really considering them even as useless as the other 2 back seats are, they're a place to put stuff.

I think you could get there easier and cheaper in a zr1. But zr1 is rwd and will be less useable than the other 2.
I think i would be most worried about a 1khp gtr as far as reliability, maintenance, expenses go.
Personally on my budget and experience i would go with the vette but i dont know your situation. I felt like i could "trust" my vettes more than my 997 although none were anywhere close to 1000hp. I will say my 500hp vette was a lot more of a handful than my 580hp 997 thats why i say a 1000hp vette would be one wild and crazy ride (maybe unusable).

I would go with the GTR, owning 1000hp gtr and almost 1000hp 996tt but turned down now to road racing setup
for the gtr you need at a minimum rods, but I would add also pistons and can get to 1200hp very reliable, oem manifold turbos with 3071 cores, upgraded IC, fuel system upgrade - pumps and injectors at a minimum
transmission needs only cltuches and small fixes if keeping torque down
997 should require quite the same, but GTR handles the power a lot better. Keep in mind also the bigger diameter wheel of the GTR, helps a lot
No zr1 experience, but been passanger into a monster 1000hp z0+compressor... what a machine !
After all I would go for the GTR, 911s should be driven at 600-800hp, at least that's where I like them most.

Im really leaning toward the 997. Also heard that the 997 manual transmission is quite durable for 1000whp what do else do i need aside from the rods to handle 1000whp?
No vipers here. Im from the Philippines wish their was though. The vette is also good and i think it would need less mods to handle the power
I have friends that own gtr, they really have lots of aftermarket support which i think the 997 is weak on. I think the gtr would be the last car that i would consider. i really dont like the auto i prefer manual and the gr6 transmission is a but fragile have a few friends that broke the gr6 with just a tune and an exhaust

better studs, 12" would be best
clutch - but be aware for manual trans and 1000whp... not the best idea, I would do only Tilton
fuel system and injectors, many options
turbos - gtx3076 with big AR or bigger turbos
ICs - 4.5" or bigger
Ypipe - 3"
tune - many options
hope didnt forget anything
and.. I wouldnt do only the minimum anyway
You hava a very nice car! Wish i could import the car here, taxes here are crazy. The new mercedes gts amg are sold here for $291k the 991 turbo s for the same amount and the 991 gt3 RS For $395k Crazy amount for car taxes a used 2008 997 tiptronic is sold here for $135k i wish cars here are cheaper 😢
at a very minimum besides rods I would do

Coming from an sti it sucks to have a narrow power band and a not so efficient engine even have a friend that owns a 600whp on nos its just not worth it to mod an EJ engine keeps lifting heads. Better to buy buy a car that was really designed to handle power.
What parts does the transmission need replacing to reach the hp goal?
For the OP a few questions?
1. What is your budget $$$$?
2. What is your intended purpose?
- Track Days
- Street Racing Straight Line
- Drag Strip
- Canyon Burner
- Dyno King
- All of the Above
- Something Else
3. What fuel do you have access to?
- 93
- E85
- Less than 93
- Race Fuel
4. Are you doing the work yourself or farming it out?
5. Will you trailer it to where you race the car, or is this a true street machine you want to drive where you race it?
6. On a scale from one to ten, with ten being a professional driver (that's PAID), how would you rate your driving skills? Pls take no offence to this question, but a 1000 plus HP car on the street or track is a very serious machine... Some of the best drivers have consistently stated, learn (through professional training) to push a car to its limits before adding one additional horsepower to what your have.
If you will answer these honestly (especially #1.), I think we can help you narrow down your choices better...JB

2. i want something of a highwady cruiser but reliable maybe drag racing. goal is to have a fast reliable car that doesn't break down.
3. i think our 100 octane is equal to your 93. im also open to e85 flex fuel.
4. labor here is cheap compared to yours so i can let other people do it for me.
5. I want to be a street machine no trailers needed
6. maybe 7 or 8 used to run with a few pro drivers before and was planning to race semi professionally but i had bigger things to take care of so that didn't work well. i wasn't pro fast but i lets just say that im faster than average.
Thanks Sir JB!
Do i need to change stock sleeves for that power how is the power band compred the other 2 cars assuming that all reach 1000whp?

3.8 would help, its actually 3745cc so just +145cc
4.0 or 4.1 will require way more money
consider 3.6L 911 that revs safely till 7500rpms versus a 3.8L GTR that revs easily till 8000rpms just with some minor heads upgrades like Ferrea single springs and retainers kit that's like 1100$. Surely 997tt can do 8000rpms but gt3rs crank is recommended and also Ferrea, slightly more money. So 997 has narrower powerband, dont know about ZR1
Trans are strong, usually 3rd gear gets broken after some time.. there are some reasonable offers for gears on the market, I use gt2rs gears and I'm happy.. OEM quality, price is also ok. the GTR also needs gears to be safe @100whp or you are on borrowed time, GTR gbox upgrades are way more expensive than 911s
Imo gtr handles the power better than 911, anyway 911 Tiptronics are very fast in straight line and racing from a dig as they shift fast enough and dont loose boost between shifts, for MT I would do something like Tial alpha3076 run them at 1.8-2bar and call it a day, with good fuel we are talking 850whp or even more, good power band, cheap, reliable, fun.. just my 2c
