Question Basalt Black vs. Flat (regular) Black

Interior will be two-tone terracotta / black.

But, can't decide on which black to go with for exterior.

Help please!

Thanks.

I love the regular, non-mettalic black.

Sorry guys, but I love the mettalic black. Hides the dirt much better and looks great in the sun. IMO, regular black only looks good if you are married to waxing and all that stuff. The mettalic paint is so much easier to take care of.

Flat black look awesome when clean and polished. That said, I will never own another flat black car again as it was the biggest PITA to keep clean and swirl marks free. I really like the metallic blacks which are still difficult to keep swirl free and clean, but they are much easier than flat black. I had a basalt black C-TT. Loved it.

I agree 100%. Black is probably the best color for any car BUT it only looks good after you have spent 3 hours polishing it. Even then, 10 minutes or a few miles later the car is covered with dust and looks bad again. I used to wash my triple black 01' 996 cab every week even if I didn't drive it. Then I'd polish out little swirl marks every 3 months. My arctic silver 997S cab is the complete opposite. I have seriously washed it 6x in the 8 months that I've owned it. If you are a perfectionist stay as far away from black as possible. If you just don't care and intend to use a brillo pad to scrub the bugs off anyways.... go for it!

I just spent 3 hours washing/drying/vaccuming my car. It used to take me 30 min to do the 993.

I will never get a black car again...till the next one...It's amazing how much easier even a white car is to maintain...But the TT in black is just sooo hot...

I was told by my dealer that the Basalt black comes with clearcoat from the factory, but for some reason the regular black does not!! (??) He strongly recommended if your going to get black get the Basalt. I saw a used 996TT in plain black in their showroom once and it looked aweful. Unfortunately the original owner had not looked after it and it needed to be wet-sanded, but you can only do that so often before the paint is gone.

Seems like the worst place for information is at a dealer...

I posted pictures of my basalt/two-tone terracotta here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ad.php?t=49766

IMO, The basalt was much easier to take care of and the mettalic gives it a nice glow in the sun.

Nope, your dealer is dead wrong! I machine polished swirls out of my black car enough times to know. In fact, I don't think I have ever owned a black car that wasn't clear coated.

On a side note, Nissan has come out with a new paint that has some elastomeric properties. It actually heals itself when heated. They did a demo where they scratched (fine swirl mark type of scratches) the paint on a car and heated it with a lamp and they all disappeared. Supposedly all you have to do is leave your car out in the sun and the clearcoat will fix all the swirls. Sounds like some truly kickass technology if it really works.

I believe Mercedes was going to release paint that incorporates nanotechnology. It was supposedly very very scratch resistant. I haven't heard anything about it for a couple of years though.
