Any SoCal guys into collecting expensive longboard/surfboards?
I have 6 original Marshall Madruga "Gyotaku" (Japanese fish painting) longboards I was going to use to decorate a boardroom in a tropical theme with, but didn't end up getting the right ceiling height (need 12' ceilings minimum), so never used them. They're stored in padded bags, no UV exposure, no moisture, never touched water, hung in a gallery briefly before they came into my possession.
Each is an "original art" board, meaning, instead of production boards with silkscreened rice paper underneath the glass, these have the original paintings that touched the fish and were photographed to produce the production art for separation and silk screening. It's like buying an original painting versus buying an inkjet reproduction of the painting, these are the real deal that the artist made by hand.
Gyotaku, briefly explained, is the Japanese art of painting an actual fish and pulling a ricepaper print directly off of the fish itself, transferring the artist's sculpted painting from the fish body to the paper. The colors of the paint combine with the real texture of the fish's surface, scales, fins, etc, and the effect is beautiful and very unique.
Each board is signed and numbered with fish images from the Pacific including Mahi, Sheephead, Perch, Yellowtail, Sea Bass, Garibaldi, actual Kelp, etc... Sizes are 9ft (4 boards), 9'6" (1 board) and I even have a 12' board with a direct print/painting taken off of a Marlin. I don't have pics of the boards yet, they're still packed up, but if someone's seriously interested in the lot, I'll get them out and snap shots.
It's probably a $10,000-15,000 set of boards as the original art boards went for in the neighborhood of $2500 apiece initially. I even have an all-black board with thick redwood stringer, and the Sea Bass painting on it was made in metallic silver paint. It's really stunning. Additionally, two of the boards have top/nose sections with underlaid Reyn Spooner actual fabric from the Marshall Madruga Collection that Spooner did for Nordstrom. I also have matching single fins for these boards made with the same underlaid Reyn Spooner fabric.
So, if someone has aspirations of decorating a big boardroom in a tropical/surf theme...making your boardroom an actual "Board Room"
...or if you're just a serious collector, this is a nice group to obtain together and display as a collection in a home with large walls, a "great room", gallery, etc. There were only a handful of these original art boards made and I believe I have the most complete grouping of them; other collectors may have one or two.
You could surf on them if you wanted, of course, but I don't know many people who surf on such expensive boards. Collectors buy original art boards to show, and then get production boards (much less expensive) to surf on.
If this interests you, feel free to PM me. SoCal buyers only. I won't ship or deliver them.

I also have a 10' personal board that Marshall shaped specifically for me, I used it twice, but I haven't had time to pursue surfing, so sadly it's sitting unused. Gorgeous board too.
If someone buys the lot, that person may want to buy this board as well, so he has something snazzy to surf on while the others are on display.

I just remembered I had some pics on CD packed away. I have all of these, and the fabric one I have "originals" of as opposed to the production board pictured here--and my fabric underlays are even nicer.
I don't have a pic of my custom board, but this gives you a good idea of what they look like. My custom board has Mahi and some smaller fish on it, both sides.
You have to see them up close to see the texture in the paint...and that black one is incredible looking. It's got silver metallic paint and silver and gold sparkle accents in it contrasting with the black board and redwood stringer. The most drool-worthy board I've ever seen.
The perspective on these shots isn't spot-on, but the boards are perfect shape--the photog had a hard time shooting them because they're BIG.
That Marlin board is 12 Feet! You could have a luau on that thing!

I just got a PM asking if shipping is really out of the question for out-of-state buyers. Nothing's impossible. If someone wants to buy the collection, I'm sure I could get these shipped just as local surf companies do with their longboard stock. It'd probably be a couple of hundred dollars for shipping, maybe more, but I could nail down those details once a purchase deal is worked out. If you want to buy the lot, I'll certainly help set up shipping if you need it.

Dave, we sold some classic longboards to a collector in Texas that runs a surf museum - let me know if you want me to dig his contact info up. We shipped them out through a local surf shop.
Guys, if you know anyone who collects Pacific-themed artwork, these would be great pieces to hang in a great room or corporate boardroom. Please pass along the link to this thread if you think anyone you know would be interested. I haven't had time to figure out where to sell these, and probably still won't for a couple of months (busy w/work). I appreciate your help. Thank you.
Btw, I'd consider trading for an interesting watch possibly, so that's an option if anyone's got something they were thinking of selling, let me know.
