Brake Squeal
Brake Squeal
MY AMV8 Roadster is about a year old and close to 7k miles. For the past 2k miles I have noticed a lot of brake squeal to the point of embrarassment when I am driving around malls and such.
At faster speeds there is no brake squeal it is only in the 10-25MPH range. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I dont use the car that hard so it is hard to imagine brake pads are ready to be replaced. My nearest dealer is a hike so it's a good day trip to take it in.
Any thoughts?

Use your brakes harder and it will go away. Some people talk about a bedding process...serial hard stops...which I tried but only solved the problem temporarily. Either way, an occasional harder stop will keep it from coming back.
This ain't rocket science. The brakes on your car are no different than any other car with disc brakes. If you aren't comfortable with checking yourself to see if the brake pads have thin metal anti-squeal shims on the backside, then just bring into any local competent garage (a Midas will do) and have them pull the pads to check for shims.
What XJRS Owner is trying to say in his own gentle way is that there was a dealer fix for this which involved adding shims to the back of the brake pads to cut down on squealing.
If you are the only owner of this car, then it hasn't been done because you'd know if it was. If you bought the car used, they should have told you if it was done. If it wasn't, I'd still try bedding them by using them a bit harder. If the squeal doesn't go away, take it to the dealership to have the shims done.
It's annoying, yes, but fixable.

Talked to dealer and they said just use them hard since there is a layer of gaze on the brake pads if we didn't use it hard. Tried few times braking them hardly but still here. Since my car is already out of warrenty, I am trying to order rear brake pads with lower compound, see if this would help. (squeal only happens on my rear brakes).

I have the same issue and my car is still under original warranty (for another month!). Would installation of the shims be covered by the warranty? My understanding is that the warranty does not cover brakes (as in wear), but I guess this could be considered a defect, not a wear issue.
I have an '06 Vantage that I bought from someone else. I do have a light squeal as I'm coming to a slow stop (usually less than 20 mph). It is annoying and a bit embarrassing at times. For the most part though, I tend to down-shift so it is not much of an issue (except for the wear on my clutch
).
).
Just to chime in.
I've also had very loud squeal from brakes. I ended up using a bedding process of 1) speed 2) hit brakes hard 3) repeat. All sounds gone.
As 'Tahoe M3' mentioned, a little harder on the brakes in the city keeps mine squeak free.
I also find when my car comes back from service the brakes squeak for a few days, perhaps they spray a cleaner on the rotors??
As for the Shims, if the sound doesn't disappear, this is how service takes care of the problem and seems very routine to them.

1.Tried the bedding process as mentioned, it was gone only for a very short while cuz the brakes were heated up. But once its cooled down, the ANNOYING SOUND came back again!
2.And I can't find any aftermarket brake pads for our V8V, anyone can chime in on this? Brake pads for the rear besides OEM?
3.Do you guys get the sound while braking? or the sounds just happen during rolling from 0-30mph? For myself, sound comes on rolling. No sound while braking...
If anyone can help, it would be awesome! Thx in advance!
Best,
