Read this forum a bit. I have had 2 and they have been amongst the most reliable and certainly fun cars that I have owned. There was a time that they were not as good but I would say that the Vantage and DB9 cars are as good as any Porsche. In fact, my first Vantage had less warranty events than my 996TT. None of the issues prevented me from driving the car. They were mostly things like radio and gas lid. The finish is on par with Bentley and the style and looks are as good as you can get. Despite the fact that the Vantage base car is a bit slower than other cars, I think that it s a bargain in terms of it's stye and exclusivity. This is an exotic that people don't resent and that everyone agrees is beautiful. It sounds like your tech is judging based on Eddies car or what he remembers about the DB7's or possibly the Vanquish. For your needs, a Vantage roadster with the sports shift is the way to go. If you're into used, I would look for a car with the 4.7L engine. The programming on the sports shift is better and the car is a bit faster than the 4.3L. Also, a lot of the little issues were worked out. I know people who have bought 2010 &11's and have been very happy. Even if you're not into shifting, you will appreciate the paddle's.

get the 4.7 vantage and you won't regret it. I have the 4.3 modded, and unless it was for the 12 I wouldn't change it.

NO. The V12 is a beast. It's closer to a Gallardo than a V8. The power creates a bit of a traction issue at launch which may make them seem closer at first but once the tires are warm and you're going a bit, the V12 walks away. Having said that, the V8 is a great car. I would have one if there were no V12.

Have had my modded 4.3 Vantage for 4 years - as reliable as any new P-car I have owned. Left a 550 HP 996tt (w/ lot's of track mods too). You can mod a P-car a lot more due to quantities sold and aftermarket companies out there. That said there are a few nice companies I have delt w/ for AM. Just a rare fun car to own ...

"They were mostly things like radio and gas lid." Strange, I had the same thing. The gas lid would not pop open, I had to lift it, and the AM radio failed and was fixed by installing a new module--both fixed under warantee.

Me too. This is a common issue and AM issued a service bulletin about it.

Even the V12 has a tricky gas release.

I love the vantages but my local buddy picked one up and within 3k miles of buying it used from a dealership, he had to replace the clutch ($5k) and fix a seal leak ($3k)

Your "boy's" experience is not common. Most on this site will tell you that the Vantage is well built and, aside from a few minor niggling issues like the gas flap, quite reliable.

I had a 2006 for 3+ years and 23,000 miles. Was reliable and no major issues. A few minor warranty issues handled during regular service intervals. In my opinion just as reliable as any other car.

My 2007 has been very reliable. No major issues to report. I did have the gas cap issue and engine gasket leak covered under warranty but overall it has been much more reliable than my Porsche, BMW, etc. In fact, my Porsche was in the shop for more little annoying things than any other car I have owned. I still loved it but the quality was not as high as I would have expected. I love the AM though!
