RSC 4.3L Clutch install and review (more coming)

Just a little feedback...

We just installed this new RSC Clutch on our V8V a few weeks ago. So far, we are very impressed by the response, a little more aggressive and responsive than the OEM. Have not put a lot of miles on the vehicle, but the drives since the install have been great.

Further, we also installed the RSC filters while the car was in the air and we could not be more pleased. For such a little investment, the car has a little more throat and throttle response.

Very pleased with the products thus far and the help that Stuart and his fellow associates at RSC gave us. Great company to work with and will keep my eye on their radar to see what they have coming out.

Stuart, if you would accompany this with some of the photos of the clutch you have, that would be great. I do not have any at this time.

Can you give the cost of what you have done so far? Would like to see the cost difference compared to a factory spec clutch is all.

I believe the clutch kit from RSC was $3495 and the air filters were $130.

The OEM AM clutch kit ranges from $2500-3800, from my research. But, because of the problems that the OEM clutch has, you would just be replacing the same bad clutch over and over. I thank RSC for finding a way to fit a new and improved clutch configuration into the vehicle without having to make drastic changes to the tranny or other pieces.

I do not know the exact cost of install because we also completed a full service, fluid check, and inside and out detail.

The car looks incredible!

Im sorry I cannot be more specific.

Hey K2, how is the clutch engagement? When I had my LWFW installed on my turbo, it was great in terms of the quickness to rev, but the engagement point of the throttle (either on or off) made it a PITA to drive on hills. Does the RSC clutch make it any more difficult to feather the throttle? Also, any chatter which is common with LWFW?

Thanks

Engagement point felt the same, with a little more pressure underfoot. I would say more control over the engagement process. I would say someone that knows how to properly drive a tuned vehicle, would have no problem using the low end of the clutch with little chatter.

Still very impressed, though the car will now stay with its cover on till we see eachother again in a couple months.

The chatter I'm talking about is at idle. Most LWFW will chatter at idle unless the clutch is in.

I'm not supposed to post pricing in the open forum, but if you were to buy this as a complete kit (pressure plate, friction plate, flywheel, slave cylinder/release bearing, flywheel bolts, rear main seal & transmission mount polt) then based on a couple of invoices I have seen from AM Dealers, our kit is approximately $500-600 more than the OEM part. Whether that represents good value is up to each person to determine - for me, if I were looking at $5K for a clutch change and could spend an extra 10% for a stronger, lighter and more responsive product I would probably dip into the boat fund and go for it.

Thanks for the review Jeff, and may I add, you were an absolute pleasure to work with as well. Gentleman and a Scholar!

Wow...this looks good.
Is this just for a manual car, or does the kit also work for SS?

It is a complete package, to say the least.

This is for both the manual and SS 4.3L cars. Obviously the normal clutch reset procedures are required for the SS.

Thanks to another 6speeder (also Gentleman and Scholar!) I have a 4.7L SS clutch & flywheel on the way over and we will be producing a similar kit for these cars. AM lists the 4.3L clutch and flywheel as the same part number for SS & Manual, but as different part numbers for the 4.7L SS and 4.7L Manual. So until we get our hands on a 4.7L Manual unit to determine the exact differences the 4.7L will just be for the SS.

You can sometimes experience chatter with lightweight flywheel/clutch setups, but almost always that is when you use unsprung friction plates. Our setup uses a sprung center plate, just like the OEM clutch. This type of center plate rarely exhibits any chatter because the springs mitigate it pretty well.
