Difficult shifting when cold.

Hi all, I have a 07 manual V8V with 17k miles and this winter it's been very difficult shifting into 1st and 2nd gear. When the car warms up it shifts just fine even though it's still cold outside. I did switch to Royal Purple in the trans over the summer base on reviews from other members. RP has the same viscosity so I don't know if it's just a coincidence. Any help would be great.

hard shifting when cold

I have an '06 with 42K miles and it does the same thing until it's warmed up. I changed trans fluid a few months ago to Valvoline 75-90 Full Syn and it didn't make any difference. I just don't force the shifting until it's warmed up good - then it shifts fine. I bought the car 12/10 with 17K miles on it and haven't noticed any changes in the car from then. It just works great!

Thanks for the feedback. That's great that you drive your Vantage. It been my experience that cars that are driven have far less mechanical problems than those that sit for months.

The above service bulletin addresses this in 06-07 6 speed manual cars. I had this done on my 06 and it made a huge difference. Ask dealer if your car is in VIN range and if your car qualifies for this update. The update includes adjusting and/or replacing some linkage IIRC.

Fwiw, I got m 08 manual with 12k miles on it in Nov and noticed exactly the same 'issue' driving it on cold days in Toronto through Dec 27 before it was put into storage.

My 6 speed manual db9 (has an italian gearbox - a graziano rear mounted transaxle) and does not want to shift to 2nd when cold. This manual transmission on the db9 is very rare...apparently this issue w cold shifting is normal, I asked my friend who knows Ferraris well said it's an Italian gear box thing, since Aston is essentially using the same gearbox as the v12 GT Ferrari cars (575mm, 612 scaglietti, 599 gtb etc) on the db9 it makes sense w the gearbox. I don't know what manual gearbox the vantage uses, cars are completely different...from chassis standpoint correct? I don't know the configuration or the type of manual gearbox in the vantage?

Surprised you have this issue with the DB9 sunir. It's not an issue with the V12V. I thought this was only an issue with the V8V. I had it with my V8V. I just got accustomed to skipping 2nd for the first 10 minutes of driving. Not a big deal.

I have an 07 Vantage but I have not experienced any of these problems. I keep my car in an attached garage that never gets below 40 degrees though. However when I do drive the car and park it outside for a couple of hours (like when go to the gym) I still have no shifting issues. Lucky me I guess.

It's ussually not an issue with the DB9 because 99% of DB9 are automatic with paddle shift. There are a few (although very rare) DB9 with manual gearboxes (the graziano rear mounted tranzaxle) which seem to not want to go into 2nd gear when cold. I talked to my local dealer service writer as well as another dealer and an independant shop expert and they all said it's normal until the car heats up. Dunno ? ?

Or maybe it was serviced already by a previous owner? It's a pretty common problem.

Try double-clutching into 2nd until the gearbox warms up -- makes a big difference.

Sunir, the DB9 has the same Graziano gearbox as the V8V. Also, the two cars share the same VH chassis platform -- basically just in different lengths.
