When the pump goes..you can normally hear it just sitting in the car with the windows open and turnign left to right(don't sit on full lock), unless the shaft snapped, then there would be no noise..but then you would be complaining of NO assist ever when driving in any conditions..

Burnt fluid can cause this like XJS stated, even a blockage..even a fault with the PPS ..aka power steering pressure sensor..there's really to many "could be's" that would have to be checked..not to hard to diagnose when in person with the aston amds scan tool, but really challenging over the net with no hands on

Judging from the color of the fluid in the pics, don't believe it's at all steering fluid(still going with seperator on leak)..if it was a power steering system leak, you'd have air sucked into the system and the pump would be growling and whinning big time..by this I mean the noise would get you freaked out to the point of you shutting down the car thinking you really screwed something UP this time! lol

I haven't talked with thomas in some time..hehe then again I've been on paid parental leave for a few weeks now at home..hehe that could be why
What do you mean the caster bolt doesn't look like it moved?

I heard a slight noise (buzzing like) when turning, actually easier with windows up though as my car is way loud now. How much does a new pump cost? I think you all are correct with this the more I read/hear. Thanks

Regarding the leak, it was more of a spill/splatter as its all around the separator....have you seen them leak that bad irish?

Newborn? Congrats!! Try to get some sleep

congrats on the newborn, Irish!

i replaced my AOS about a month ago. it was very easy to do. but mine was just seeping - it wasn't nearly enough to splash. that said, it did seep enough to coat the entire hose that comes out of the bottom of the AOS.

if anyone else has a leaking AOS, it's very cheap and easy to fix. if i remember correctly, i paid $26 for a new AOS from a dealership and installed it in just a few minutes (one bolt, two hoses).

Yes they can leak pretty bad. Just depends on how early to catch it.

Any way to get a sound clip/video of the noise you hear from the pump?

I think irish means the bolt does not look it has spun around. You can tell when you can see the marks from where it was before, like indents or rub marks.

Doing 'donuts" can take out the power steering.

Take a look at this video. Go to about 6:20 and watch them do donuts and have the power steering fail.

You can see the result is similar.

Wow, congrats to you both!

Thanks for the clarification AMFixer to Irish's post.

Just an FYI, I have a flatbed coming tomorrow to pick her up and take her in. I ran the car in the driveway for 20 mins today and not a single drip....so wierd.

Upon starting the car the steering was easy then became hard again. Also of note, had a neighbor look at the engine bay while I was turning and the buzz was not present...what was present was every time I turned the wheel left (direction of doughnuts) the PS cable near front of car jerked. When I went right it was normal. Perhaps its just plugged (I hope/pray). Will know soon enough.

Landa-where in MI? I went to MSU.

That video pretty much sums it up except there was no annoying lady and my car was still drivable. Nice find.

Nice find indeed. But I've got to stand up for Vicki, I enjoy her reviews on 5th gear but, like any driver, she's not the most comfortable passenger .

It's been a while since they let her have at an Aston but she did have some fun in the

Recent fun reviews from her include the:

and the

where she smokes a few drifts, loves the car but notes dryly that it doesn't give her 'aural' pleasure like the last one.

Show me a better female car reviewer!

I'm in the Rochester Hills area (S.E. Michigan). I went to WMU, but my wife went to State.

I found this video a few days ago, and immediately thought about it when this topic came up. I still wonder WHY this can happen. I guess its one of those things where it takes just the right sequence of events regardless of how rare.

Also, Vickie isn't usually this annoying. She can drive the heck out of a car though. This video just has her a bit silly and giggly (sp).

Now that you mention it...I remember when I turned my BMW 550i vehicle in when the lease was up. When I first got it, I took the runflats off and put on a set of rims with Michelin PS2s. Of course the OEM runflats were basically new when I was to turn the car back in. NO WAY.

I put them on the car and proceeded to do some heavy, smoke filled burnouts. I even taught my son how to do them. Needless to say, the rears weren't "new" anymore.

Hey, I paid for them, why waste them.

Had the same thought Landa, although I learned the hard way.

So I had the car towed to the shop today and its a ruined power steering pump as was thought. There are bits of metal in the fluid and the concern is that it may have gotten into some of the steering components

Anyways, these pumps are expensive and only in England so the car will be sitting for a while, get a good flush and a new pump. Hopefully thats all that is needed.

What an expensive 30 second lesson.
