2009 V8V HDD Sat Nav - Maps Upgrade

Hey everyone,

I just finished updating the maps on my 2009 V8V hard drive disk (HDD) sat nav system. I ordered the Volvo DVD for around $200. Here's the link for the 2011/2012 North America maps:

http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...gationMenu=YES

The Volvo part # is 31326249 1122. I suggest ordering from Navteq's webiste directly. If you go to a Volvo dealership, they will charge you $285, instead of $200.

A few things to note:

- The update process takes almost 3 hours , so you best do it while driving or while your car is plugged to a battery tender.

- The update process can be done in stages. You don't have to do it all at once. The update process simply resumes where it left off.

- The AM startup logo will NOT be replaced by a Volvo logo . It appears that our sat nav systems do at least have some AM firmware built in.

- The interface (e.g., home page) does look updated.

- Not sure if we previously had this option, but the updated maps seem to have added the ability to view things in 3D.

A few pics are attached.

Thanks macksamus for the info. I am curious as to the benefits you see over the standard info that I have in my 09 Nav now?

Nice write up. Would this update also apply to later nav systems (2010 - ) in other models (DB9)?

I have not yet had a chance to test it out on a drive....will probably not happen until this weekend or next week. But given that the maps on our original systems were probably current through 2008, I am guessing there should be some noticeable updates (probably depends more on where you live)

Provided the DB9s have the same HDD sat nav systems as the V8Vs, it should work. Someone on the AMOC site used the European Volvo DVD on a 2010 V8V and it worked just fine.

I selected 2009 XC90 since that also uses a HDD-based system.

I may be wrong, but I thought 2009 was the first year that HDD sat navs were introduced into the V8V. Prior years used a DVD-based system. If that's the case, the DVD I purchased will not work for you.

I posted a link to that one in a recent thread but you can find it here. This is the set you need for the non-HDD navs. This is for the 2005 XC90 vs the 2009 (which is HDD based). The XC90 actually went to the HDD system in 2007.

So still a little confused about the 2008 nav, not sure if it's HDD? Do the DVD ones have to have a DVD in at all times? If so then my 08 also has HDD cause your images look the similar to mine. Sorry I had the car for less than a week and did not buy it from a AM delear.

Almost certain that the sat nav was upgraded to HDD-based starting with MY09.

Both use DVDs but the 09's have the DVD data uploaded to an HDD. 08 is DVD only. Follow the link I posted above but select an 05 or 06 model year for the XC90 and that will take you to the right page for the 06-08 V8V Nav.

As Aston.ca noted, both systems use DVDs. Starting with MY09, the DVD data is upload directly to a HDD for faster access. But, even though the data is uploaded to a HDD, the DVD still needs to say in at all times in order to prevent people from making pirated copies.

In MY08 and earlier, a DVD needs to say in because it is constantly being accessed. The North America maps generally consist of multiple DVDs. Depending on where you are driving, you may get prompted to insert a different DVD which contains the apporpriate map data for your geographic area.

Hope that helps to clarify things.
