Radar Detectors for AM
Radar Detectors for AM
I'm thinking of installing a radar detector in my Vantage. I'd like to know members' feedback on K40, Valentine, Passport and any others... I've heard different reviews. Is it very difficult to install in the Vantage? I'd like to try setting it up myself. Thanks...
Classic debate, it really comes down to personal preference. I had a V1, but I got rid of it as I live in the city and it's just to dang noisy (you're the filter, not the electronics like in a Passport). So I got a 9500ix...got 2 laser tickets w/n a 5 mile span then bought a 9500ci (should have done it right the first time).
Have the 9500ci discretely installed in Virage and Valentine V1's in 2 other cars.
I like the active defense and gps integration of the 9500ci. It does require a custom install (front/rear), but it much cleaner than having something hanging from the windshield.
The Valentine1 picks up radar, lidar, and pop well - but if you are tagged with lidar you may as well pull over. The arrows are useful and are good to determine direction signal is coming from.

Some of these terms are all new to me but I'll research 'lidar' and 'pop well' and find some youtube videos on how they operate and if they are difficult to install. I don't think I want to stick anything on the windshield. I'm wondering what the price difference among the different detectors.
Monica,
"Lidar" is laser. "Pop" is a type of radar (rarely used, I believe).
I use my V1 in various cars so I stick it on the windshield -- it's not as elegant as a built-in installation, but it's very portable

In terms of radar, so long as your detector can pick up the signal far in advance, again not sure what else you need.
Between the V1 and 9500ci, if both have comparable radar detection capabilities, the 9500ci wins hands down for its laser shifting feature.
Of course there is also cost. The 9500ci runs about $2500 at a reputable shop, which includes the install.
